A simple, traditional, Andalusian home in a truly spectacular location. With outstanding views over Lake Portillo, Casa Azul is a place to enjoy the natural surroundings of rural Spain at it's best. The house has been sympathetically restored, is full of character and charm and set WITHIN the Parque Natural de Sierra Castril. A 10 minute walk takes you to a superb, secluded bathing spot yet it's only a 10 min drive or 30 min walk through the olives groves to the beautiful old town of Castril.

Le logement
Casa Azul Castril is located in a remarkable position on a promontory above Embalse Portillo within a tiny community of 4 traditional houses, all but one of which are generally unoccupied. It has fine lake views from the first floor and astounding ones from the rear garden terrace..... but the best bit is the lake itself below the house. The crystal clear waters have an amazing green/azure glow from the limestone rocks and offer the perfect antidote to the summer heat. There are snorkels and masks, 2 beach chairs and a parasol so you can make the most of this spectacular and secluded location. With no real access it really does feel like its your own private lake - its very unlikely you will be sharing it with anyone else.

The House:
The property is simply furnished in keeping with its history and heated by a woodburner and back up heaters in winter. There are fans to keep it cool in summer although the thick stone walls and mountain location means it maintains a reasonable temperature anyway during the summer. Air conditioning is not necessary.

Ground Floor
Open plan lounge/kitchen/diner with double sofa-bed and woodburning stove,
Dining table for 6
Oven, hob, toaster, kettle, fridge freezer, two sinks, small dining table for 2/4

Bathroom - large room with Moroccan tiles and a double shower.

Upstairs:
Master bedroom - antique double and single beds with great lake views.
Bedroom 2 - large room with antique double and single beds. Direct access out to the rear garden area.

Outside:
Parking for 2 cars
Dining table and chairs for 4
Lounge chairs and outdoor rug
Sun parasol

Things to Do:

Lake Portillo - wild swimming in the lake, a 10 minute walk down the track (15 mins return...its uphill!!).

Parque Natural Sierra de Castril - various well marked trails and tracks suitable for hiking or mountain biking. Details and maps of some of the trails can be found in the house plus there are more available at the Castril Visitor Centre.

Walk from your door through the almond and olive groves to Castril or alternatively try one of the other short (up to 5km) local walks exploring some of the many ruins and caves in the area. Details of routes are in the house.

Visit Castril historic town with its museum, restaurants, crafts and superb outdoor pool with picnic facilities and bar.

Castril Gorge Walk - a fantastic 1 hour walk from Castril along a suspended boardwalk leading to Lake Portillo.

Visit San Clemente lake for swimming and hiking - 20 mins

Galera - famous for its unusual "cave" houses built into the limestone rock and with a municipal pool and good museum - 35 mins

Huescar - the nearest larger, lively town with good restaurants, monuments, lake etc - 25 mins

Orce - more cave houses plus a fantastic freshwater bathing pool open year round, archaeological digs, castle, restaurants - 40 mins

Horse riding in the adjoining Parque Natural de las Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas at Hinojares - 30 mins.

Explore the nearby Parque Natural de las Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas. Fantastic for wildlife, birds and the whitewashed Andalucian villages ("pueblos blancos") - 30 mins

Granada (1 hr 45 mins) -The Alhambra, and much much more!

Aguilas - nice sandy beach, not busy, not overdeveloped - 2 hrs

Sierra Nevada National Park - (2hr 30 mins to ski-lifts, less to the Park) - skiiing, nature, hiking

Accès des voyageurs
Entire house.

Communal area to the front of the property including use of the original bread/pizza oven - If you're up for a challenge collect some wood from the nearby forests and try your hand at cooking the old fashioned way. NOTE: due to the risks of wild fires this should only be tried between October and May.

Natural plateau to the rear of the property with fantastic views into the National Park

And of course the lake, a 10 minute walk down the track.

Autres points à prendre en note
No smoking inside thanks - but with a view like this who'd want to smoke inside?

To gain access to the natural plateau overlooking the lake it is necessary to climb the stairs in the house and go out of the back door.

Young children and pets would need to be supervised on the plateau as there is a sheer drop.

Pets - well behaved pets are welcome (maximum of 2). Please inform me if you are bringing a pet.

Note that our neighbour has cats.

The track to the property is owned by the community as a whole. It is unsurfaced with some potholes in the upper section and is a bit rough and steep on the lower section. We have always found it OK in small hire cars- Fiat 500, Fiat Panda, Citroen C3 etc provided you take care. As with all things, the more you use it the less daunting it gets and the remote location is after all part of the charm of the place. ** improvement works were done to the track in April 2019. ** December 2019....but the rains have damaged it again! It’s still ok but take care.

As of March 2019 we have had satellite wifi installed with a limited useage allowance per month. It’s perfectly fine for normal use - browsing, streaming etc but please respect the guests that may follow you by not downloading, uploading or gaming as this will very quickly use up the allowance.

Hi, I'm Lisa a country lover lucky enough to live on a beautiful small holding in Mid Wales with my various dogs, cats, chickens and geese. A Chartered Surveyor by trade, when I'm not working I love to spend as much time as possible in my cottage garden where I grow a variety of flowers as well as fruit and veg. I also enjoy art and craft projects - stained glass, mosaic, knitting and crochet to name but a few and my home is full of creations I've made along the way (some good, some probably not so good!) as well as unusual pieces collected from my travels. When not in the garden I love to explore this wonderful area on my bicycle or motorcycle. I love to travel and have recently found a new thrill in travelling round Europe on my motorbike. I love the freedom it gives me as well as the ability to meet new and interesting people.
