When I bought my home I wanted to create my dream space. Having a living room that was both comfortable yet stylish was important. It all started with the color of the accent wall and knowing how much I loved the angles and simplicity of Mid-Century decor. Putting Mardi Gras beads all over the house didn’t interest me, but neither did plain white walls. The table was the first piece of furniture I built. Took me 3 separate pieces of wood because I didn’t know how to properly stain the wood and kept getting drip marks. It was also the first time using my new drill and I stripped a screw before it went in and can’t get it out. I figure nothings perfect, but I love how it was the first piece I made.In typical shotgun homes you have to walk through one room to get to the other. Mine is no different, but I didn’t want it to feel like separate rooms. There had to be a flow so I used all the same colors throughout the house. Keeping the Mid-Century style I bought a vintage bed frame and converted it to a sleigh bed. I built the bench at the end of the bed and side table out of 100 year old recycled wood from the bayou and even made my own wood stain out of steel wool soaked in distilled white vinegar. It turned out so well.

Stephanie’s house was a perfect place for us to start our New Orleans visit. It is nicely updated with plenty of historic charm. It’s more the homey side than the hotel room side of Airbnb, but we prefer it that way. It was very clean and comfortable and easy to settle in. The ke…
