Le logement

Our newly restored 1882 farmhouse is the ultimate rural retreat, backing on a 10,000-acre state forest with more than 200 miles of hiking and snowmobile trails. Quiet, cozy-yet-sophisticated design, the perfect writer's retreat or family getaway.

We're writers who bought and restored this property 10 years ago in our quest for a quiet weekend retreat. This is the ultimate retreat, with sightings of red fox, black bears and deer, and hummingbirds feeding in the extensive rose and herb gardens. The modern kitchen overlooks the state preserve and is equipped with cutlery and service for 8, stainless steel appliances, cookware, and 15-feet of fabulous local bluestone countertops. We have central heat and a cozy wood stove - with cords of seasoned firewood stacked outside for you to use. There are three airy bedrooms with queen beds in each, and one small child's bedroom with a single bed. Sheets and towels are included. Two large bathrooms with spacious showers, a large deck with a new propane grill, picnic table and chairs, and in warm weather, a fabulous sleeping porch with two couches/twin beds. Our guests love to sleep out here and watch the fireflies!

Our five acres are surrounded on two sides by the Burnt-Rossman State Forest Preserve, which includes almost 200 miles of snowmobile/horseback/hiking trails. Please note this is a remote location. The closest supermarket is a Price Chopper 15 miles away in the village of Cobleskill (We suggest that you stock up on groceries at the Price Chopper in Cobleskill!).

** We are a ONE HOUR drive from the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and 45 minutes from the Field of Dreams baseball camp. If you choose to stay with us, kindly acknowledge that you will be driving two hours round trip to Cooperstown and we thank you for NOT giving us a lower score for our location. If proximity to Cooperstown is important to you, please DO NOT book our five-star home and penalize us!

** We are very close to the SUNY Cobleskill campus -- about 15 minutes down our hill -- and most of our neighbors work at the college. Our house is a great base for conference guests and close to the Blenheim Farms, a popular wedding destination!

Guests have full access to all areas of the house. We do have a brand new washer/dryer in the basement.

Prior to check-in we will give you a code to open the keyless locks on our doors. We will not be at the property during your stay but you can reach us at any hour by text, email or cell and we do have a wonderful handyman in case of an emergency.

You'll love the quiet!

We love to hike past the miles of old stone walls that mark the many apple orchards that flourished here over the past 200 years.

We do have neighbors with horses and we love the occasional whinny, or the sight of riders outnumbering cars on the road in front of the house. Our neighbor thanks you in advance for not disturbing her horses or venturing on to her property.

There are several lakes in the area that are perfect for kayaking.

You must have a car to reach our home.

This is a house for nature lovers, family or friend get-togethers, and people who want to escape the noise of the city! Keep in mind we picked this location for the solitude and distance from civilization!
We do have a coffee maker and grinder and we'll leave you fresh roasted Columbian beans from Fairway. We like to cook, so there are plenty of pots and pans, a Cuisinart, a big mixer and an ice cream maker.
We recently renovated the kitchen, which has a dishwasher, gas oven and stove, and large fridge. (It also has a really nice window seat that overlooks a beautiful old apple tree.)
We are willing to negotiate a lower rate for a lease of longer than one month.

This house is a very special place. The setting is idyllic backing onto a protected forest. Between the forest and the house is a large, beautiful Garden robust with flowers. There are also fruit bearing trees and bushes. Many hummingbirds and butterflies came to visit. As you enter, there is an outdoor porch with an umbrella table and barbecue (with rotisserie). Entering the next set of doors there is a summer porch with seasonal sleeping for two. Inside the main house you will find a lovely and well cared for home. The furnishings are summer home coordinated, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. The kitchen has every utensil and appliance one could ask for. The first floor also has a queen bedroom with full bath, living room and dining room. Upstairs are two more queen bedrooms and a single, with another full bath If you want to relax away from the crowds, this is the place. These owners have thought of everything! Open the windows and enjoy the clear mountain air! We intend to return!

Marty's house was clean and fully furnished upon arrival. There were plenty of bedrooms for me and my kids to sleep in, with 2 full baths, which helped myself and 4 kids between the ages of 10 and 16 to shower and get ready each morning.. TV was working great downstairs. All the lights worked in the house. AC and heater worked properly. Plenty of clean towels and linens for everyone. Kitchen was large and spacious and all the utensils were at our fingertips, with a full size empty refrigerator for our grocery needs. Large backyard for my kids to run around and explore. Even had a patio deck to hang out on.. My only complaint was I did not realize how far the freeway was from Marty's house. It was 15 miles from Marty's house to I-88. Not too too far, but since the road was a beautiful country road to the freeway, it took 25-30 minutes to get to. A little long for me, since it took us 45 minutes to an hour to get to the All Star Village for my son's baseball tournament every day. My kids and I were not prepared for the long travel every morning and night when we came home late. It was a long travel back thru the woods at night with many fog patches, which made the ride from the freeway to Marty's house, that much longer every night.. I do recommend staying at Marty's house if you enjoy a country setting. It's a very quiet area and to be honest, I don't think I saw any neighbors in the 8 days we stayed in her house. Again, very quiet, peaceful and hidden from the outside world..

This place was just as described, plus more ! Kitchen was gorgeous, we prepared most of our meals there during our stay. Our host's recommendations for activities in the area were great. We enjoyed them all. We also explored the property, which smelled wonderful, like flowers. There were wild blackberries, cherries, peaches, and apples growing. Some of the blackberries were ripe and the kids enjoyed those. The location is secluded, but there are activities and shops within 30 minutes. The host responds quickly to questions. We enjoyed our stay, and will be back !

This property was fantastic. We traveled to the area for a long weekend for a family wedding, and it was a perfect base of operations. (As an aside, the wedding venue - Blenheim Hill Farm - was also fantastic.) The property's decor combined cottage-style architectural elements and historic furnishings with modern updates, appliances, and creature comforts. The house featured a true "cook's kitchen" (although our stay was too short to take advantage of it), plenty of white fluffy towels for the two generous baths (extra large showers, claw foot tub, etc), cozy beds, wifi, board games, a nice smattering of books & magazines, etc. The location is quite remote, though other homes are nearby, and there is an evocative historic cemetery in a meadow across the street. We wandered onto a trail in the state forest near the property and could have hiked for miles. Nighttime on the porch was particularly intense - amazing stars and animal sounds. (We found ourselves Googling "nocturnal animal calls Catskills" and still aren't quite sure what we heard.) There is quite a bit of driving involved in staying in this part of the Catskills - various farmers markets, villages, and historic sites (etc) are in the vicinity, but everything seemed to be at least a half an hour away via back dirt and paved roads. But that's part of what made this spot such a wonderful reprieve from Washington DC. Thanks so much for everything, Marty!

Thank you for the very kind review, Susan! I'm so glad you enjoyed your visit. The porch is my favorite place in the house and it really is amazing at night -- it was still a bit too early for the firefly show, but the local animals are lively. You definitely would have heard coyote howls, owl hoots and raccoon chatter, and possibly the higher pitched bark of a fox. Best, Marty
