The Artist's Loft is a very comfortable, one-bedroom BnB on our historic, Cornish Arts Colony property. The building is surrounded by woods and lawn on our 36 acre property. The view of Mt. Ascutney across the river and in VT is inspiring. The Artist's Loft is cozy, quiet, and comfortable in all seasons, with Rinnai heating in the cooler and cold months, and an air conditioner in the bedroom for summer. There is a queen bed in the bedroom, and a day bed sofa in the living room.

Le logement
The main house was an 1812 structure which was renovated by the splendid renovations of Boston architect Daniel Appleton in 1890, for the current owner's great Aunt and Uncle Beaman.

The house has lovely, large spaces characteristic of Victorian summer houses of the time. The Beamans lived in New York City, but spent summers in "Little New York," as they and their friends called it, in Cornish. Later the summer residents came to be called the Cornish Art Colony, as many artists, writers, and composers sought refuge here from the stultifying summer heat of city life.

The Cornish Art Colony flourished from 1882 to 1916; Cornish is nestled along the Connecticut River, which forms the boundary between NH and VT. There are many additional attractions from the Art Colony in our village, including Saint Gaudens' National Historic Site, which is across 12A from this location. The natural beauty is superb, including scenic views of the river, the covered bridge, Mt. Ascutney, and many hiking and walking trails.

Accès des voyageurs
Guests are warmly welcomed throughout our property, which is 36 acres on a bluff above the CT River. Direct CT River access is provided by the town of Cornish just south of our property, where cool summer swimming and sunning are welcomed. The area offers walking and hiking trails and many beautiful spots for reading, painting, and meditation; the Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge, which is the longest two-span bridge in North America; and Windsor, with its restaurants (fine dining to casual), and the Artisans' Park, north of the town. You can rent a canoe or raft in the Artisans' Park and they'll launch you in the Ct River.

Autres points à prendre en note
The Artist's Loft is also good for longer stays, as there's plenty of room for storage in the bedroom, and in the kitchen cabinets and pantry.

Cornish is a quiet village, with no "town" center. The Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge, just south of the Butternuts, is the longest two-span covered bridge in North America. The views of Mt. Ascutney from this property are superb. The Cornish boat landing and dock are just south of the property. Across the covered bridge is Windsor, VT, which has a grocery, pharmacy, excellent restaurants, quaint shops, a village green with weekly summer concerts, and the Artisans' Park, with its organic food offerings, canoe and raft rentals, Simon Pearce glassblowing facility, Harpoon Brewery with restaurant.
Up Rte 12A from the property is the tax-free shopping of the West Lebanon shopping malls, and Hanover, NH, with Dartmouth College and many additional shops and restaurants. To the west, beyond Windsor, is Woodstock, VT, with its fine stores, restaurants and Pentangle Arts. Just across the river from West Lebanon is White River Junction, VT, which has art shops and craft shops, and is a flourishing arts center, including Northern Stage.

Mt. Ascutney has numerous hiking trails, including those to the top, which has spectacular views. . On the hot days in summer, the swimming areas of Hartland dam and Wilder dam in Vermont are a short distance away, and are delightful spots along the Connecticut River. Cornish also has a boat dock on the CT River for kayaks or canoes, and this is just south of our property. The excellent skiing areas on Mt. Sunapee are thirty minutes southwest.

I'm a writer and a journalist, and publish an arts' and events' monthly in our region. I have abiding interests in art history, theatre, music, literature and history. I have just completed two books on the Cornish Art Colony artist Maxfield Parrish that I have written with his grand-daughter. I enjoy meeting new people, and traveling! I also teach youth Shakespeare classes, including directing a full production each summer in our barn theatre, and I teach literature and art history at Dartmouth in the OSHER program. I have a little pug named Lizzie.
