Things to do:
Mt Field National Park is one of Tasmania's most loved national parks. The park has a wide variety of scenic features and wildlife and offers a great range of facilities for day visitors. Few other national parks in Australia offer such a diversity in vegetation, ranging from tall swamp gum forests and massive tree ferns at the base of the mountain, through rainforest along the Lake Dobson Road, to alpine vegetation at the higher elevations.
The park essentially has two visitor sections. The first, near the park entrance, includes picnic facilities and the famous Russell Falls. Stunning walks through enormous fern forests and some of the tallest trees in the world are available in this area.
The second visitor section is centred at Lake Dobson and includes the long day walks and skiing areas. For the latest snow reports during the ski season, see . Dramatic mountain scenery and alpine plant communities are a feature of the higher parts of the park.
Mt Field - Tyenna Valley
The causeway across Lake Meadowbank leads to the diverse Tyenna region, the home of the tallest hardwood trees in the world. Photograph the old shingle-roofed hop kilns on the way to Westerway – gateway to the Tyenna region. Ellendale, the view of an often snow-capped Mt Field East appears before you.
The Tyenna River is abundant in feisty stream trout and it's an ideal place to spot a platypus before travelling on to the renowned Russell Falls at Mt Field National Park, where Tasmania's eco-systems are easily accessible.

One of the area's treasures is the Junee cave at Maydena. Rainforests flourish in the Florentine and other nearby valleys. Enclose yourselves in wet myrtle forests, and explore the "Eagle Eyrie" at Abbott's Peak.
Before you leave the area, experience the unforgettable scenery of Lake Pedder and the South-West Wilderness World Heritage Area.
Did you know?
The last Tasmanian Tiger was caught in the Florentine Valley near Maydena
The Tasmanian South West Wilderness Area comprises 1.38 million hectares of pristine wilderness.
Lakes Pedder and Gordon form the largest inland freshwater storage in Australia - 27 times the volume of water in Sydney Harbour .
The tallest tree in the Styx Valley is over 86 metres high.
The highest commercial abseil in Australia is at the Gordon Dam.
The Junee cave system contains the deepest caves in Australia
Russell Falls is lit up at night by glow-worms
Mt Mawson
Mount Mawson is located within the Mount Field National Park and about 1½ hours drive from Hobart in southern Tasmania. The ski areas are at an altitude of about 1250m and the area usually gets fairly consistent snow falls during winter resulting in sufficient cover for downhill skiing from mid July to mid September.
Mount Mawson is a small club field operated by the Southern Tasmania Ski Association (STSA). The area is open to the general public for downhill skiing. The STSA is formed from members of the seven ski clubs with lodges on the mountain the area, the Ski Club of Tasmania, Oldina Ski Club, Wellington Ski Club, Hobart Walking Club, Mount Mawson Ski Club, Alpine Club of Southern Tasmania and the University Ski Club. Members of these ski clubs help to maintain and operate the tows.
There are three 'nutcracker' rope tows and one small surface lift in the beginners area. Tow belts for use with the rope tows can be hired on the mountain. The tows are accessed from the car park via a scenic 20 minute uphill walk through alpine forest. This can often be skied on the way home. The area caters for beginners, intermediates and expert skiers and snowboarders and has one of the steepest runs in the country. Trainer ski patrollers are on duty whenever the tows are operating.
There are numerous cross country skiing possibilities from Mount Mawson including the Rodway Range, the Tarn Shelf and Mount Field West. A number of public shelter huts are located in these areas.

Port Arthur.
Port Arthur is a small town and former convict settlement on the Tasman Peninsula, in Tasmania, Australia. Port Arthur is one of Australia's most significant heritage areas and an open air museum.
The site forms part of the Australian Convict Sites, a World Heritage property consisting of eleven remnant penal sites originally built within the British Empire during the 18th and 19th centuries on fertile Australian coastal strips. Collectively, these sites, including Port Arthur, now represent, "...the best surviving examples of large-scale convict transportation and the colonial expansion of European powers through the presence and labour of convicts.
Port Arthur is officially Tasmania's top tourist attraction. It is located approximately 60 kilometres (37 mi) south east of the state capital, Hobart. In 1996 it was the scene of the worst mass murder event in post-colonial Australian history.

Jennifer's place is like staying in a friend's holiday house. It is comfortable and has great heating and is equipped with everything you need like cling film and laundry detergent, lovely old crockery, as well as creature comforts like electric blankets, great sound system and large flat screen TV (and recliner rockers to enjoy it from). We did some fantastic long walks (Mt Eliza and Tarn Shelf with our 13 and 6 year old) so the bath and laundry were a bonus. Loved the Junee Cave walk down the road as well as the Railtrack Riders. Great central base to explore Mt Field, Southwest NP and the stunning Gordon River Rd and Dam.
