Le logement
The Spiral House at Cloudfarm has been designed as a luxury nature retreat for couples . The building lay dormant for many years and during 2018 has undergone a complete renovation. This miniature house has been carefully shaped, maintaining a small environmental footprint and crafted using materials that have been re-purposed or sourced locally. The space also showcases the work of your hosts, award winning artists Celeste Coucke and Stephen Fearnley. Original paintings and ceramics- such as the porcelain lamp above the dining table and the plates and bowls in the kitchen as well as the tiles in the kitchen and behind the fireplace- have been lovingly hand made at Cloudfarm Studios.

The firewood that we provide for our guests is sustainably sourced from a local firewood supplier. With no TV in the space, guests have the opportunity to experience screen free time; and whilst good mobile coverage is available, guests will need to provide their own data.

Spiral House at Cloudfarm was included in the top 20 most unique regional stays in NSW (Concrete Playground, August 2020)

More About Cloudfarm…

Cloudfarm covers 13.35 hectares and is situated on the highest point of the Illawarra escarpment just under 800m above sea level. Mt Murray is the core of an ancient volcano- and you are right on top of it! Basaltic soils and high rainfall support a diversity of flora and fauna. Vegetation consists predominantly of tableland basalt forest (An Ecologically Endangered Community), native grassland and temperate rainforest. Most of the property was once cleared as farmland however the protected rocky slopes are in more or less original condition, supporting a rare fragment of endangered temperate rainforest. The rainforest is now regenerating and covers approximately one third of the property, with two thirds mostly native grassland. A magnificent stand of Eucalyptus fastigata crowns the top of the mountain, a remnant of endangered tableland basalt forest. Cloudfarm also forms part of an important wildlife corridor between the Macquarie Pass National Park and Sydney water catchment. We are currently taking part in the “Thin Green Line Project”. The “Thin Green Line” is a corridor which links native vegetation and wildlife between Victoria and Queensland. Cloudfarm is located at a particularly important part of this corridor, as it is east of Robertson that the line is thinnest. Native animals and vegetation are particularly vulnerable here, as a result of the activities of humans and feral animals.

Wildlife:
We have lots, all generally shy and nocturnal. Your nearest neighbours are wombats- there's a big active wombat burrow right next to Spiral House! Cloudfarm is a member of the Wildlife Lands Trust and we are also members of Wildlife Rescue South Coast. Cloudfarm is home to rescued wombats. We have left a torch in the kitchen if you want to go night walking. Please note: all our wildlife- including the rehabilitated wombats- are wild. If you spot a wombat, watch it from a respectful distance.

Wildlife known to inhabit the property include bare nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus), swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor), brushtail (Trichosurus vulpecula) and ringtail (Pseudocheirus peregrinus) possums, gliders (Petaurus spp.), spotted-tailed quolls (Dasyurus maculatus), long-nosed bandicoots (Perameles nasuta), koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus), eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), antechinus (Antechinus spp.), short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), red-bellied black snakes (Pseudechis porphyriacus), highland copperheads (Austrelaps ramsayi), tiger snakes (Notechis scutatus), blue-tongued lizards (Tiliqua scincoides scincoides), frogs and fresh water turtles. A long- nosed Potoroo (Potorous tridactylus) has recently been photographed in the rainforest. This is very exciting as these animals, along with spotted-tailed quolls, are listed as vulnerable.

Cloudfarm is also home to diverse bird life which includes wonga pigeons (Leucosarcia melanoleuca), superb fairy-wrens (Malurus cyaneus), golden whistlers (Pachycephala pectoralis), eastern whipbirds (Psophodes olivaceus), superb lyrebirds (Menura novaehollandiae), satin (Ptilonorhynchus violaceus) bowerbirds, wedge-tailed eagles (Aquila audax), grey shrike-thrushes (Colluricincla harmonica), eastern rosellas (Platycercus eximius), yellow-tailed black-cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus funereus), king parrots (Alisterus scapularis), magpies (Cracticus tibicen), whistling kites (Haliastur sphenurus), brown goshawks (Accipiter fasciatus), tawny frogmouth (Podargus strigoides), southern boobooks (Ninox boobook), welcome swallows (Hirundo neoxena), barn owls (Tyto alba), laughing kookaburras (Dacelo novaeguineae), common bronzewings (Phaps chalcoptera), honeyeaters and finches... and many more.

Accès des voyageurs
Please park at the top of the pathway down to Spiral House. Please don't drive closer to the building - the area is roped off for your safety.

Guests are welcome to explore the property as long as you come prepared with boots. I’ve left a Cloudfarm “mudmap” in the house manual. Please stay on the driveway or along the pathways/ mown areas. The driveway is a great morning heart starter- it’s about 1 km down to Tourist rd. There’s also a beautiful little rainforest walk which takes about 10 minutes. The walk starts on the lower lawn, down from the big swing.

Guests may visit Cloudfarm Studio - please ask if you are interested.

When walking, keep out of the long native grasses. The rule is if you can’t see where you are stepping, then don't walk there!

Snakes: If you see a snake when walking: STOP. Don't go near it- retreat SLOWLY. Snakes respond to fast movements, assuming danger. If a snake feels threatened, it may become aggressive. If you leave it alone, it will slither off.

Please note: Children/infants need to be supervised by an adult at all times. It would be devastating if a child was hurt.

Farm Animals:

We have chooks (Collectively known as “The Wilma’s” ) They make great eggs which we will have left you for breakfast. You are welcome to visit them but please don’t go into the chook house unless invited.

We also have two cows- Sassy and Bessy. They are pets, basically four legged lawn mowers. They are quite friendly. An electric fence is installed in and around the cow paddocks… Don’t touch it… it bites! There is a stretchy electric fence/gate you can open to access “The big paddock”, which is where Sassy and Bessy mostly hang out.

If you go through a closed gate , please respect the law of the bush and close it behind you.

Our dogs are called Edith Piaf and Possum. They are mother and daughter- Edie is mother to Possum. Edie is a Poodle, Poss is a Spoodle. Their job is to tell us when guests arrive; they are very friendly and love visitors. If you go for a walk you may very well have company of the four legged variety....

Autres points à prendre en note
It's about 1 km up our driveway to the top of Mt Murray. Part of the driveway is gravel, and access to Spiral House is via a track through a paddock. Two wheel drive access is fine, just take it easy and don't bring your sports car!

Our escarpment top location is a dynamic environment with weather that can be extremely changeable. Allow for 4 seasons in one day and remember it's usually 6 degrees colder than Sydney and the coast. Cloudfarm is so named because of the beautiful mists that magically pour off the escarpment and billow around us, cooling the temperature and veiling our mountain top. On humid days in summer we are often fog bound in the afternoon due to temperature inversion between the coast and highlands.

Smoking is not permitted inside Spiral House.

The pathway down to Spiral House is uneven and there are stairs. There are some solar lanterns that provide low light. If you arrive at night, PLEASE BRING A TORCH.

Cloudfarm is like many Australian country properties, with lots of uneven ground and rocks and sometimes falling branches. Snakes, spiders and creepy crawlies are just part of the great outdoors.

Visitors to Cloudfarm enter at your own risk. We will accept no liability for any injury, loss or damage that may occur whilst at Cloudfarm.

Potential hazards aside, we appreciate your visit and hope you will enjoy your stay on our beautiful mountain top.

I grew up in Sydney... My husband Steve and I moved from Bondi Beach to Cloudfarm with our daughter in 1999 - which makes us " tree changers" . Cloudfarm is a slice of paradise, we enjoy the big sky and slower pace here, the connection to community and to nature. Steve and I are both artists- I am a ceramic artist working mainly as a public artist but also on private commissions and exhibition works. Steve and I work from our mountain top studio, which guests may visit if they wish. I'm keenly interested in the natural environment, the local fauna (especially our resident wombats) and enjoy bushwalking. I spend as much of my free time as possible gardening and love my veggie garden and my chooks. I enjoy travelling when I get the chance- anywhere and everywhere. I love cooking, reading, relaxing with friends and singing around the piano. The Cloudfarm motto is "Thought into Form".
