My childhood home is an ancient manor in San Mauro Fortress, a small village near Matera. The house may host very comfortably up to six people. Heating, energy and all facilities were added so as to keep the place as it was, with its original furniture, its fireplaces and its old fashion atmosphere. I rent the whole groundfloor. It owns independent access, two large bedrooms (with their bathroom), living room, study room, kitchen and dining room.

Le logement
You are on the top of the medieval defence wall, near the end of the main street that connected the tower and the cathedral to the Black Friars Monastery. A number of peregrine hawks cruise generally around the Tower: hence the Manor name. from the windows you can see the medieval village and the valley underneath. In Autumn the smell of fireplace smoke is in the air and, while processions, funerals and wedding parades still pass through the main street with the annexed brass band. The house hosted also a monk, famous scholar and man of letter, who left many ancient books in the old library (1700.800). Do not touch: my grandmother used to meet its spectr while searching for his books. You myay prefer to find other spirits that my grandfather used to hide from her. The old iron beds, the full wood dressers and the fireside falem generate a feeling of peace and stability you cannot find elsewhere. Of course there is no movida, no cinema, no football show. Reading, walking, trekking and going for mushwoom and flowers is the main activity. You can always get drunk during the many village celebration of an extraordinary number of Saints.

Accès des voyageurs
Guest may access and use the entire floor with exclusive use of alla spaces. I prefer to host one family, group, or people who decided themselves to travel toghether. The house can host 4-6 people very comfortably. It owns two entrances, one with a few steps on the front , the other fully flat on the rear. Guest have access to the wood shack (in a vault, underneath).
Large groups may ask to share also the first floor (in this case the house can contain up to 10/12 people). In this case they will get a 15% discount. However they will share the kitchen at the ground floor and, in Autumun/Winter, they will be asked a contribute for heating. To keep warm 500 mq. is very costly.
As far as i am rarely at home large groups of family might want to rent also the First floor. This may be agreed upon on contact. The first floor is provided with two large double bedrooms with a related (smaller) bathroom, a normal sized bedroom with single deds and a larger bathroom. It has its own lounge and study room. However, in this case guests of both floors shoud share the Kitchen and dining room.

Autres points à prendre en note
As stated the bedrooms are very laege and can contain even three people. One is already provided with a third single bed. Another single bed may be provided for in the other. Since november to half of April San Mauro may become very cold. Three years ago we had 25 degrees below zero in Februuary. This is why in this periodm price is higher.
Internet connection by mobile phones might be sometimes disturbed, depending on the providers. However I always find a location where the signal can be taken.
When diffferent groups or famiolies agree to share both floors they must know that the first floor has the same facilities of the groundfloor (3 bedrooms, fireplace, study room and lounge. However they will have to share the kitchen at least for cooking and washing. There is no cooking place so far at the first floor.
There is no phone landline in the house. A mobile phone is needed.

Emplacement

San Mauro Forte, Basilicate, Italie

San Mauro was much more important in past Times (1400-1900) as a primary agricultural, farming, breeding and livestock market. It was controlled most of the time from the noble family of "Acquaviva", whose palace is still there. The two world's wars brought away a lot of people and Others began to leave looking for work and still keep going so far. The advantage is that you can meet all of the villagers in a one morning walk inside the village walls and call them by name the day after. A further advantage is that the country still holds a strong agricultural production and many breeding farms. Wine, oil (the village still claims to be the ""oil town") , any kind of meat and cheese, fresh and seasoned (expecially pork and sausages), herbs of any kind, mushrooms and even tartufo may be found at half the market price. I strongly suggest a visit to "Taverna Pezzolla" in Accettura (10 km) to personally experiment how peasants' food may originate a wonderful haute cuisine.
Note tha San Mauro is NOT movida friendly. It is a place for resting, feeding the body and the mind, walking in the woods, visiting particular and unknown geological and historical sites, etc. From there, you can easily reach Pietra Pertosa, the ancient Greeks' fortress over Basento River, where you may try the "Angel Flight", if you have the guts (I have not). One can reach many burgs like Guardia Perticara (Burg of Italy, 2018), Accettura (famous for her "Celtic feast" in may);, Tricarico, where there is both an ancient medieval center and a pre-historical achelogical cro-magnon site (and also a wonderful restaurant: 'I tre cancelli', that means the three gates to hell, purgatory and paradise, depending on what and how much you eat); Castel Mezzano, where you may arrive diving from the top of mountain to the plain, in the 'Angel's flight'; two national natural parks and more. When you are done, you may reach Taranto, Matera and the Calabria shores in less one hour.

Ho viaggiato in Europa, Sud-america e Russia. Mi piacciono I principi azzurri . In alternativa, chi mi procura cuochi autisti e i maggiordomi.

I am living in Bari, 130 km far from my childhood house. Therefore I cannot but rent the house for at least a six days period. Ony in this way I can personally receive guests and show them the house and the village. You may ask to come for shorter stays. However. this is possible only when I am living in the San Mauro palace. That is a rare event.
When waiting for guests, if possible I go to stay at the first floor to have the pleasure to receive them. Generally I stay there the first day they come and give full explanation about the use of rooms, baths, household appliances and, if necessary, heating appliances. I also suggest places to visit, events near to come, place where to eat a good meal. If they like, love to prepare myself a typical lucanian dinner. Before living i address them to an old friend of mine who lives in front of the house. She is ready to hepp and knows very well what to do.
