Parking is at the top of our long hill driveway, so it means that you will be walking down a grassy gentle hill around to the front of the house, to enter the apartment. If you have significant mobility issues, this may not be the best choice for you due to our steep driveway and there being steps to house, stepped floor in the bathroom.

Le logement
We offer you a well designed, recently renovated apartment in a Greek Revival home which has two bedrooms, a full kitchen, a shared 3 season porch, full bath-including claw foot tub, hardwood floors and a lovely yard. Nestled on Monument Mountain, we are high on the hill overlooking Housatonic village and river. With nearby skiing, hiking, biking, museums, restaurants, theater and shopping, this cozy spot offers accessibility with privacy.

The apartment is perfectly situated to explore the many charms of the Berkshires, both it's natural beauty and it's many cultural attractions. We are 15 minutes to Tanglewood and Shakespeare and Company; 30 minutes to Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival; 10 minutes to Great Barrington's diverse shops and restaurants, The Triplex Cinema, and Mahaiwe Theatre; and 10 minutes to Chesterwood Museum, The Berkshire Botanical Gardens, The Norman Rockwell Museum, Naumkeg and Butternut Mountain Skiing. We are a short walk to both the famous Berkshire Mountain Bakery and their delicious sourdough breads, delightful with your morning cup of coffee, and the Brick House Pub for your evening enjoyment. The Housy Cafe, another two-minute walk away like the Brickhouse Pub, offers terrific breakfast and lunch options, and great coffee; about six minutes away by foot, is Pleasant and Main Cafe, for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

If you're looking for a friendly, pleasant, affordable, relaxing place to stay, you've just found it!

Parking is at the top of the long driveway (for first-timers, the driveway seems steep, but vehicles actually handle this handily), where there is crushed-gravel area that easily fits four cars.

Drive straight up the driveway--it is a steep driveway of some 200 feet in length, and may remind you of a gentle roller coaster ride, but rest assured, I use it every day.

At the top of the driveway, park in the gravel parking area.

To get to the house and the apartment, you'll be taking a gently sloping and curving grassway toward the house, and then going past around the right side of the house (you'll see bluestone flagstones and a covered pile of stone dust that is part of the terrace work I'm in the middle of, but the way is clear). Going down to the right of the house is a bluestone path that passes a small deck, then several landscape steps, and when you have finished the short descent you are on the front lawn.  You'll see the front porch and the apartment entrance is the left side door.  Lights will be on at the back, side, and front of the house in case you get here when it is dark.

By the way, something that can be a bit confusing to first time visitors is that what looks like the first floor at the back of the house (what is seen from the parking area) is actually the house's second floor, but this is at grade level since the house is built into a slope.  Just remember that when you are in the parking area you are looking at the back of the house, and you go around to the right to get to the front of the house to get to the apartment, which is on the first floor.

The door will be unlocked and I'll put on an interior lamp, in addition to the porch lights.  The key will be on the small dining table.

Adjust the Nest thermostat to your comfort if the apartment seems at all chilly--the place is very cozy and draft-free.  The wi-fi code is on the side of the refrigerator. Some juice and snacks will be present, and there is coffee and cream in the fridge, too; tea is on the shelf behind the kitchen sink.

I lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts for 25 years before moving to the Berkshires in 2005. Out here is the "Shire," I undertook a deep renovation of a Greek Revival Duplex, built my art studio, and landscaped the heck out of the hillside property. This is a wonderful place to be, with its relaxed pace, the beauty of the land, and the many astonishing cultural venues. When not working on a small project or another on the property, or in the studio, or tending to the 1,700 square foot vegetable garden, I'm likely working at The White Hart Inn in Salisbury, Connecticut, where I tend bar. Or I'm out on a walk. Or reading a book. Or visiting friends. Or listening to The Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood, or looking at art, or humming tunelessly, cooking in the kitchen.
