Rata Lodge was an enjoyable stay hidden amongst the greenery, a close drive to famous Pancake Rocks. The staff were very friendly and helpful! We slept 6 young adults in the dorm room and enjoyed playing games (some with alcohol :P) while the parents relaxed downstairs. Board games were also available. Facilities weren't cutting edge but were sufficient standard. There is wifi but no phone signal; if you have important calls to make (travel arrangements etc) arrange to do it over (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) etc or keep in mind reception's opening hours so you can borrow their phone. One night we walked to the nearby beach (about 10mins) and enjoyed the night sky and sea with minimal light pollution. If you're also keen please remember to always always be wary of the waves and your own safety, bring a torch (or fully charged phone), and waterproof shoes are recommended because there can be some mud.

We really enjoyed our time at the lodge! It was perfect for my family of 9 to get away :) We will stay again if we ever have another big group!

This house is a little more like backpacker place (Rata Retreat sleeps 10!), but they are trying to make it a little more upmarket, sort of like an eco-lodge. There are a few other styles of accommodation on the property set deep in the cool rainforest, very atmospheric. Rata is still having some renovations done but is roomy and reasonably comfortable. Some of the facilities are a bit rudimentary but you can't beat the setting and the staff are very helpful too. All very relaxed. Two bedrooms sleep 4 downstairs, 6 singles on the top floor in one room which adjoins an open plan lounge area. The walk through the rainforest on the property down to the rugged coast is a real treat in the evening, absolutely beautiful. Very close to the pancake rocks; laundry facilities on site (near the office, not in the house we rented); small shop with honour system for a few essentials near the office, but I would suggest if you are eating in then bring your own food from Greymouth.

This is actully not a holiday house as I expected. However,it was a good ecperience for me and my friends. This resort is clean and provides everything we need. Even got a nice walking path to the beach. Just a bit hot on the top floor. If travel as a bunch of friends, this will sure you a fun night.

It was the most disappointing place we ever stayed in our entire life! The advertisement and photos on air bnb is deceiving and totally misleading. We stayed with my family of 9 people and it was the most uncomfortable, unsafe and dirty place ever! Not only did the host fail to inform us that the place was still undergoing renovation despite us communicating directly via phone prior to arrival the day before and on the morning of our stay, the manager of the motel retreat tried to make light of the issue when we arrived at the place in the evening. He told us that he was very sorry but there were some workers who cooked there earlier and so there could be some food smell still lingering and he wanted to make it up to us by offering us a loaf of bread and a bottle of wine, and he even offered us free breakfast the next day. We were surprised initially that he was so nice over such a small issue like this and even reassured him that we were not fussy people and would definitely not mind some food smell in the place. We later realized we have been conned when we actually get to the retreat. It was still undergoing renovation and it was obvious that the renovations were still incomplete and the tools for renovation were just put aside (both inside and outside the house) and covered with sheets temporarily to make way for our stay there that night. The floor is dusty and the furnitures in the lounge next to the kitchen was shabby and the table there was broken as well. The window on the 2nd lounge area where the stunning view of the forest was supposed to be was all boarded up with temporary wooden plank boards and the door leading to the stairs walkway couldn't be closed properly. It was a nightmare having my 2 year old girl there as she was naturally very attracted to all these tools and screws which were lying on the floor and she tried many times to escape outside through the doors which couldn't be locked (the main entrance door and the door to the walkway on 2nd floor both has no locks!) until we had to push a sofa to block the doorway so that she can't escape. The bathrooms were small and were all located at the ground floor. It was a terrible inconvenience for the older members of my family who has mobility issues navigating the stairs. I talked to the manager about our dissatisfaction and he promised to talk to the owner of the place and get back to us but we have not heard from them since leaving the place. All he could say was that he was sorry and that the renovations were taking longer than expected and he didn't know that the worker left their renovation tools inside the house as well... If he have had the courtesy...
