Unfortunately, my time staying at La Villeta in this Airbnb was not a good experience. I would not recommend this listing at all. Nothing about it was WRONG or BAD, which is why we are giving it 3 stars, not 2 or 1. However, if you decide to book this place, it is important to know all the facts, instead of being misled by other reviews and/or the La Villeta website.
First, this location is very very far from the downtown area. There is a cool food market near the hotel, but that is it. If you're visiting Chiang Mai without personal transportation, this place is not the right choice.
Second, we had absolutely no interaction with Orne at all. Part of why we picked this place was because the reviews said Orne was so welcoming and helpful, but we never met her, talked to her, or had any communication with her.
The room itself was not charming- very utilitarian. There was a hot water boiler and a cup that had 2 sugar packets and an already opened, half-empty packet of instant coffee. The cup was never refilled with tea or coffee during our 5 day stay. In the bathroom, there was a bottle of shampoo and a bottle of shower soap- no hand soap, lotion, or anything else that one might find at a hotel. There weren't even washcloths. I know this is Airbnb, not a hotel service, but there are certain standards in SE Asia that this place did not live up to.
At La Villeta (the complex where this room is located), the website boasts a pool and breakfast each morning (another reason we were attracted to it). However, the website is misleading. The pool is a dirty plastic tub that has been buried in the ground, and I doubt anyone has been in it in 5 years. Breakfast was the same each day- two over easy eggs, 1 piece of white toast, a hot dog, and a ham lunch meat square. They also give you coffee and juice (except they ran out of juice at for the last two days) and when I asked for tea instead of coffee, they did not have tea.
But most of all, compared to the prices of the hotels downtown, it was unbelievably expensive. As we walked around the old town, we saw signs for private rooms that looked nicer, were located in the old town (down quiet streets so noise was no issue) and were much much cheaper. We picked this place because we figured we were saving money on being a little farther away from the city, but that is just not true. It's farther away so we had to spend more on transportation AND it's more expensive than the centrally located places.
You can find something much cuter, cleaner, closer, and cheaper. If you do choose to rent this place, just be aware of what you're choosing.
