Emplacement

Lisboa, Portugal

Mouraria is one of the most traditional districts in the city of Lisbon, which owes its name to the fact that D. Afonso Henriques, after the conquest of Lisbon, had confined a part of the city to the Muslims. It was in this neighborhood that the Moors remained after the Christian Reconquest, as well as the Jews, who were also confined to the neighborhoods of the Castle.
In this and in the surrounding neighborhoods, originated the first Portuguese Mudejar art productions, which would give wings for the appearance of Manuelino. The suffering and melancholy of Muslim songs are at the origin of Fado.
Maria Severa Onofriana, daughter of a prostitute, was born in Rua do Capelão, next to the Beco dos Três Engenhos. Maria Severa was the first Portuguese fadista and the maximum expression of fado at the time.
In the house in front, was born in the twentieth century, who was considered the "king of the Fado of Mouraria", Fernando Maurício. Rua do Capelão is part of Fado iconography today. Further up, in a pink house at Travessa dos Lagares, Mariza, the most international Portuguese fado singer, grew up. Next to the house, now closed to the public, was the restaurant Zalala, where Mariza learned to sing fado. A short distance from Mouraria, in the parish of Pena, was born the greatest name of the fado and one of the greatest national figures ever, Amália Rodrigues.
After the public opening of the Mouraria Shopping Center in Martim Moniz, the neighborhood became a very busy and welcoming place. Today Mouraria is a meeting place for people of different cultures and simultaneously a place that keeps alive its old popular traditions, as can be confirmed by the existence of several fado houses, bars, taverns and cultural communities. You can walk in the best touristic route just 5 minutes from our door, in the famous electric train 28 and know the main sights of Lisbon!
