Nestled in the rolling hills of northeast Iowa in the quiet village of St. Donatus, the Gehlen House offers year-round accommodations for calming getaways and/or family fun. The property is on the National Register of Historical Places. Vianden is one of six private bedrooms with shared kitchen and living room space. Guests can book single rooms or the whole house (see other listings under my profile). Kalmes Restaurant is across the street offers dining.

Le logement
The Gehlen House was established in 1848 by Peter Gehlen, an immigrant from Olm, Luxembourg. The house is built from native limestone quarried from the hills around the village of St. Donatus. Over the years the Gehlen House has served travelers and the community at large, having been a post office, a road-side tavern, and a doll museum. In it's current capacity, the Gehlen House is an inn, providing six private bedrooms with a shared living room, kitchen and upper deck.

Vianden is a large bedroom with a queen bed and en suite full bathroom. It has been recently updated and provides a beautiful room for your stay.

A full breakfast is not provided, but we are providing a number of self-serve individual items for our guests to enjoy. Kalmes restaurant across the street is available for take-out meals and limited dining based on current restrictions in the area.

Accès des voyageurs
Guests have private bedrooms with locks. All guests have access to the kitchen and living room shared areas (see additional information regarding COVID-19 precautions in the Other Things to Note section). There is a small deck off the kitchen providing entry to the second floor.
**The kitchen is a shared space that includes both a microwave and refrigerator. We ask that guests wash their hands prior to using these items to help with mitigating the potential spread of germs. Disinfecting wipes are also available in the kitchen. For protection of our guests, we will be providing only individually sealed food items at this time. We are also providing disposable cups and silverware. Please do not use the dishes, glasses, or small appliances stored in the cupboards.

The keypad is located on the front entry door and you will be provided with the active code prior to your arrival to assure that access is up to date.

My husband, Don, and I enjoy traveling and we are excited to be able to offer space in our guest house to others. We are new owners of the Gehlen Inn and have been updating the property to combine new and old to bring our guests a comfortable and enjoyable stay in a beautiful historic space. We are in the process of renovating the barn at the rear of the property to provide space for small weddings and events, and to house our future microbrewery.
