Wakeham won the Country Life 'House of the Year' award. It is set in the middle of our farm, with multiple woods, valleys & a river. It is a minimalist house in a classical shell. Its core is a triple-height atrium wrapped around by balconies which lead to 2 double bedrooms & 2 bunk rooms. It has a 12ft deep pool, a shallow 40ft-long pool for beginners, a tennis court, and a brilliant sandpit. It is very good value; I enjoy the Airbnb community as a guest, and this is my chance to share back

Le logement
This is a lived-in house, not a property set up mainly for rent - so it has family photographs all over the place. But otherwise there is no personal material lying around. It is suitable for families but not for toddlers - it has hard slate floors to fall on, plain coloured walls that don't want to be marked or scuffed, a glass table in the atrium, and so on.

The atrium and kitchen are the main living spaces. The study is small - a big desk and two comfortable chairs and a small fireplace, plus a TV with a Freeview box and an Apple TV box. The atrium is triple-height, and large. In bad weather there are two open fires, including a huge fireplace in the atrium - and the underfloor heating works well. There are lots and lots of books, ranging from thrillers to philosophy (and there is also a large children's book section) - please put them back on the shelves where you find them!

The kitchen (which seats 9) is extremely well equipped with top of the range Miele kitchen machinery, assorted other machines, and plain white porcelain crockery. In decent weather you can eat under the portico which leads directly from the kitchen, and where we have put a large table.

Upstairs, one double room has an en-suite bath and the other an en-suite shower. They are well set up with Egyptian cotton sheets, and comfortable pillows. The bunk rooms - one of which is set up as close to a 1950s spaceship as I can manage, and decorated with a lot of pictures from the Dan Dare strip of that era - each contain bunk beds for two children (or very tolerant adults). The bunk rooms share a family shower and WC.

There is also a downstairs toilet, and one in the external laundry/utility room.

Accès des voyageurs
You will have access to the whole house apart from store rooms. You are normally very welcome to walk on the farm and even to put up a tent somewhere subject to discussion with us about where is best - though please do NOT go onto the farm on Saturdays in the shooting season (October-February) without checking with us whether there is a shoot that day.

IT IS VITAL TO CLOSE ALL GATES - if sheep get into the wrong field and eat the wrong thing, it can kill them. And all stock is a danger to itself and to others if it wanders onto the roads.

Additional - and much cheaper - accommodation is available on other cottages on the farm - look for Billy's Cottage on Airbnb to see what they are like.

Autres points à prendre en note
The atrium has a very big fireplace and there may still be some dry wood stacked outside the garden toolshed, unless it has been used up over the summer. But it would be sensible to bring some wood, matches and firelighters with you. It's important to open the chimney flues before you light the fires - they can be closed off when not in use to stop draughts. There is a lever in each fireplace to let you do that.

In good summers the pool temperature will usually be between 70 Fahrenheit (21 C) and 80 Fahrenheit (27 C) but only if you put the solar cover back on in the evenings. This summer it has been warmer than that, and it was warm in September. On October 1st it was 19 degrees Centigrade (and I spend a long time swimming), but it will lose temperature every day from now on. At the end of October it will be covered over for the winter.

It is 12ft deep and has 3m and 1m springboards (it is one of the deepest private pools in England - an Olympic medalist diver used to train here). You need to be careful on the springboards - they are both high, and vey springy! Take time to get used to them. You may not have ever been on a board this springy.

Please bring your own tennis racquets & balls if you play tennis.

Please bring your own beach towels for use by the pool - the ones from the house are meant for bathrooms only.

Rogate, Angleterre, Royaume-Uni

This house is in the South Downs national park and has stunning views of the Downs as well as of its own farm. It's in easy range of Goodwood and of Polo at Cowdray, and Midhurst and Petersfield have a good range of restaurants and coffee shops.

It is about half an hour's drive to Chichester (with the Festival Theatre) and 40 minutes to Winchester. Good wet weather activities nearby are Fishborne Roman Palace near Chichester, and the National Trust properties at Petworth and Uppark (and the very over-priced antique shops in Petworth, to browse if not to buy).

If you have not already done it, going around HMS Victory in her dry dock in Portsmouth is really worth while - you can get right down into the bottom of the hull - and there is a submarine museum in Gosport that I have never been to but which ought to be very good.

Lavant Street in Petersfield has an excellent independent greengrocer and butcher. Cowdray farm shop in Easebourne (just beyond Midhurst in A272) is a simply amazing food supplier/delicatessen with a huge range of everything you could possibly need, often organic, though it is pretty expensive. The Hungry Guest in Petworth is also a very good delicatessen and has now added a butcher's shop and a fishmonger of its own.

The farm shop and Café at Durleighmarsh - about one mile west of Rogate on the north of the A272 (look for signs on main road) - has a good range, is very close, and a fresh fishmonger is there two days a week

I live here a lot of the time. We will leave the house really clean for you when you arrive and we ask that you leave it as you found it, when you leave. I am available on the phone or by email , and am seldom more than a couple of hours drive away. Other family members live elsewhere on the farm.
