Frontenac Islands, Ontario, Canada

Howe Island is an island located in the St. Lawrence River east of Kingston in Frontenac County, Ontario, Canada. It is part of the Thousand Islands chain. Together with Wolfe Island and Simcoe Island, Howe Island is part of the township of Frontenac Islands, created through municipal amalgamation in 1998.

Howe Island measures 13 km (8 mi) long and 5 km (3 mi) wide and has an area of 31 km² (12 mi²). The main channel of the St. Lawrence River passes to the south of the island, while the Bateau Channel passes on the north between the Canadian mainland and the island.
Approximately 600 people live on the island, while summer brings many cottage residents.

With two ferries that run year round, it is a very accessible island for commuting to Gananoque or Kingston for work, shops, dining, and culture.
The ferry fee is $6.00 cash for a return trip by car and free for the many cyclists who enjoy the quiet roads to explore the island.

Notability, the roads are quiet here and cyclists can loop around the island roads to get a good ride, or hop on one of the ferries to explore county side roads.

Howe Island has a good nature trails and several smaller side roads to surround yourself in nature.

Shopping is all off island but close by.
Explore Gananoque and it’s restaurants, shops, and the Thursday farmer’s market.
Kingston is aprox. 30-40 minutes away including the ferry time, offering many options for shops, dining and culture.

I am a lover of the 1000 Islands, the St. Lawrence River and Howe Island. First starting as a cottager, my family and I have called it home since 2001. It’s a jewel of a place and with the convenience of ferries to easily connect us to the mainland it’s island living at its best.
