A message from Claire. Please note that I have 8 rooms available but only two listings on Airbnb. Our listings are Makindye House and Makindye House Annexe which are both on the same compound. In other words, please ignore that calendar as it does not reflect whether or not we have available rooms. Please get in touch I will be let you know the true situation regarding vacancies. I look forward to hearing from you with any questions you may have about the house, Kampala or Uganda.
A large comfortable shared house in a quiet, safe Kampala suburb.
Please don't pay too much attention to the calendar because we let 8 rooms and it was too complicated to have 8 separate listings. So please get in touch and I will let you know if and what rooms we have available for the dates that you are requesting. We currently have just the two listings, Makindye House and Makindye House Annexe. We let 4 rooms in the main house and 4 rooms in the annexe (1 small @ $8 pppn, 2 small @ $10 pppn, 1 large @ $12 pppn, 1 large $13 pppn, and 1 large $15pppn). There is also the Airbnb fee.
Out of consideration for our clientele (students and volunteers etc.) we try to keep our charges low. This however does not mean that the standard of accommodation is low. Just look at the photos! Four excellent staff are employed to clean all rooms, wash your dishes, washing and ironing daily and 24 hour guard.
Most of our guests come from Europe and the US and include medical students, development workers, development studies students, doctors, volunteers, tourists etc. Our house is a home away from home for our many young visitors. Our visitors often go out together or just hang out on the balcony chilling and chatting.
We have fresh salad which comes in every day from the garden and you are welcome to help yourself. Also any fruit from the garden is for sharing with the guests.
Friendly informal atmosphere. Safe area. Walking distance from market, internet, shops, public transport and the Makindye Country Club which has swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, gym, restaurant. etc. If you a tennis player, please pack your trainers. We have spare rackets you can borrow. A boda boda (small motorbike) ride from city centre.
We have three dogs which are NOT allowed in the house.
Accès des voyageurs
Other than the bedrooms and private bathrooms, all areas are communal spaces and available for you to enjoy especially the quiet area on the veranda.

Please note that the although very friendly, dogs must remain outside and should not be encouraged to come into the house or rooms.
I am around during term time but return to UK during the school holidays. During these times Grace the housekeeper runs the house. I am in regular contact with Grace and with the guests whilst I am away. I enjoy interacting with guests when I am around but mostly they socialise with each other or watch videos together. Guests often go out as a group or even take trips away together. It is a VERY sociable house so if you are new to Kampala you have friends waiting for you at the house. Salad, avocados and other fruits in season are shared. Sunday the gardener grows salad and it comes into the house fresh every day. If you don't eat it, he will stop growing it!!
If you walk just a few meters up the hill you will get wonderful views of the city below. Makindye is a quiet neighbourhood with a real sense of community. Neighbours will regularly stop an offer you a lift up the hill. They will guess that you are going to Claire's house. Coffee at Last which is opposite the Makindye County Club has free WiFi, great brownies and take away meals. Please mention that Claire sent you! The Makindye Country Club or MCC has a pool, squash and tennis courts, gym and restaurant. You can get a short term membership or pay a daily fee. The Makindye Market takes place every Friday. It has a wide range of fruit and veg.
One of the nicest things about the house is that all the young people take care of each other and often cook together or go out for a meal or to a bar at the weekend. So, if you are new to Kampala, your new friends are waiting for you at the Makindye House.
Since clothes are hand washed we kindly request that you wash your underwear yourself with the basin and soap provided. All laundry must be ironed to avoid the mango fly which lays its eggs in clothes, and can then burrow into your skin. Not nice, but ironing kills the eggs.
Please pick up your clean laundry from the laundry shelf.
Dirty laundry goes in the basket in the bathroom next to Room 1.
Please eat the salad that comes into the house each day. If you don't eat it, Sunday the gardener won't grow it!!
It is not safe to drink the tap water. The fridge is always full of filtered water.
Be sure to find out where the fire escapes are.
No house guests unless arranged in advance. For reasons of security, we are very strict about this rule.
Smoking only in the garden (not on the veranda or in the rooms)
Lock front door on entering and leaving the house.
Last person to bed turns off lights!
