Autres points à prendre en note
House and Gardens:

Pauntley Court is believed to be the birthplace of Dick Whittington and was home to the Whittington family for nearly 300 years.

It is half-timbered with three gables on the east side, part medieval, part Elizabethan and with an early 18th Century addition. Historians would find it almost impossible to completely unravel its many architectural threads. The Marquis of Somerset in the 17th Century wanted to build “a great house of stone” here but only foundations were laid. The Stokes family added on the ballroom in the early 18th-century and in the last century it was a working and somewhat dilapidated farm.

Today, it is painted a pinkish earth colour, reflecting the iron-rich soil of the area, and curled around a central courtyard, it glows rosily in the evening sun, surrounded by munching cows and sheep. Its only neighbours a Dovecote, the Norman Church and the farmyard.

There is a charming sheltered herb garden with a statue of Pan at its centre. To the south east of the house is the cloister garden planted with pleached hornbeams and two deep herbaceous borders. The sunken garden has beds of tulips, alliums and roses, bordered by box and lovely oak balustrading created by a local craftsman. Quinces and medlars help to enhance the Elizabethan feel. Views from the bedrooms are of the ruin garden, where foundations of a great house planned by the Somerset family, have been planted in yew. The garden uses stone and local bricks in an artistic manner, which might provide owners of gardens with inspiration, and which ensure even in winter the garden has an elegant bone structure.

Guest can walk further afield to the surrounding land along side the River Leadon, where if you are lucky you might spot an otter or glimpse wild ducks landing on the lower ponds.

Emplacement

Gloucestershire, Royaume-Uni

The Area:

Pauntley Court is situated within easy reach of the Cotswolds, and is positioned in the heart of the magical Gloucestershire countryside.

Have lunch at the Butcher’s Arms Woolhope, which has an excellent reputation for food and real ale.

Walkers have May Hill and easy access to The Malverns, over 3,000 acres in which to walk and the charming and the old fashioned Kettle Sings for lunch.

The Three Counties Showground hosts an annual gardening weekend in the Spring and its Royal Three Counties Show in June is very popular. There are further shows and events throughout the year.

Theatre goers will enjoy the Malvern Theatre’s programme and the Everyman in Cheltenham. Hellens, a manor house in Much Marcle has some lovely classical events in magical surroundings.

Foodies should experience dinner at The Butcher’s Arms Eldersfield, a Michelin starred restaurant in a rustic setting only 15 minutes away. Need to book in advance as it is so popular.

Visit Hereford Cathedral with its recently commissioned Thomas Traherne chapel. The nearby Castle Hotel has a pretty courtyard garden overlooking the River Wye.

Cheltenham is only half an hour away with a plethora of festivals from which to choose – jazz, literary, science and racing among them.

Eastnor Castle has a deer park and Goodrich Castle is a more windswept affair.

Symonds Yat provides day-long canoeing excursions and there are many pubs built along the banks of the River Wye.

Ledbury is a lively market town, full of friendly shopkeepers. Once a year it holds a poetry festival in July.

Gloucester Cathedral is one of the finest medieval buildings in the country and the burial place of royalty.

The International Centre for Birds of Prey is the oldest dedicated birds of prey centre in the world. A visit here gives you the opportunity to see one group of birds up close, with in many cases no wire, and watch them fly amazingly close to you.

With the property being close to Cheltenham, it is ideal for those wanting to attend The Festival and Gold Cup held in March. It is a true sporting high for horse racing goers. The Festival is the embodiment of everything that is great about Cheltenham. It is four days of atmosphere, anticipation and action, played out on a beautiful sporting arena that has no equal.

...or alternatively, just stay at Pauntley Court, relax and enjoy everything on your doorstep!
