A quiet, cozy, well-appointed home on a dirt road on a wooded peninsula in remote Cobscook Bay, truly Downeast. Near beautiful Reversing Falls Park. Not close to anything else! Wifi equipped, full kitchen, W/D. *Priced to encourage weekly or monthly stays,* for wanderers, free spirits, and artists on a budget.
Way Downeast, on a peninsula in wild, unspoiled Cobscook Bay, half an hour from the Canadian border, our 200-year-old farmstead is an ideal base for exploring the Sunrise Coast of Washington County. A week's visit in the summer would give you time to hike magnificent seacoast trails . . . take a whale-watching trip . . . venture out to the lighthouse on Campobello Island . . . shop for baskets from the Passamaquoddy tribe at Sipayik . . . visit the many galleries featuring work by local artists and artisans in Eastport. Winters offer quiet and contemplation, along with the chance for wild and solitary XC skiing or snowshoeing on unbroken trails.
Yellow Birch Farm is on 25 secluded acres on a dirt road on a sparsely populated saltwater peninsula. If you step out the door at night you'll be astounded at the depth of the stars, in a place with no light pollution, and the depth of the silence, so far from a major road. If you are looking for a coastal region of beauty and solitude (spectacular hiking, biking, kayaking, without the crowds of southern Maine) . . . if you can appreciate a lively grassroots arts and music scene . . . if you don't need a huge place (the farmhouse is ~1000 sq ft, with one bedroom and a queen-size bed) . . . and if you don't mind putting your kayak on your car to get it to the water, this is the place for you.
The farmhouse is clean and comfortable, with modern conveniences including wifi, TV with DVD (for movie watching, no cable or reception), a spacious tiled kitchen with hand-built cherry cabinets, full-size fridge, 4-burner gas range, full-size electric wall oven, microwave, washer and dryer, and a bathroom with shower. A single-sized daybed and a 7-foot couch in the living room allow for extra guests or kids. The east-facing, country-style porch is part of the rental and has a gas grill and patio furniture. The yard in front of the porch has a patio fire pit for your use (you will need to bring camp wood, or you can gather the plentiful deadwood from the forest edges around the farm).
Regarding the all-important wifi: This rural address gets internet service at 3 mbps via DSL. The signal is fine for basic internet use (I depend completely on the internet for my own daily work and research), but it's not enough bandwidth for streaming movies and other high-data use.

The post-and-beam farmhouse guest space is entirely on the first floor. (The half story upstairs is used for family storage.) The bedroom and bathroom are 60 feet apart, at opposite ends of the house (separated by the open-plan living/dining/kitchen area). The farmhouse is outfitted to accommodate mild disability: the bathroom has a built-in shower seat with a grab bar and a grab bar near the toilet; steps up onto the porch are wide and low (but no railing), and the entry is a traditional 3-foot exterior door wide enough for a walker or wheelchair.

I enjoy spending time with guests, but I do everything I can to assure that visitors have an experience of privacy and quiet and I let guests take the lead in determining the level of interaction. Since I live and work right here (in a separate apartment above the barn), I'm usually available on a moment's notice to help visitors with whatever they need. (I may be away from home at times, but only after I'm sure my guests are settled and secure.)
Yellow Birch Farm is totally kid- and pet-friendly, but your dawg will need to be on a leash around the farm. (There's room to run free down back on the pasture, or on the unpopulated dirt roads in every direction.) You must let me know if you are bringing a dog, so I can provide sheets to cover the furniture, and I do charge a $25 cleaning fee at the time of the reservation. Please also note that if your dog tends to bark a lot in an unfamiliar environment, this is not an appropriate rental situation because it will disturb the cabin guests (who are expecting silence and serenity)! Our own family includes two teenage boys who are in charge of feeding the chickens and collecting eggs--you're welcome to join them. We also have a quiet, friendly black Lab (cross) named Sheba. My kids and I live in an in-law apartment adjacent to the farmhouse. My kitchen and the farmhouse bathroom are on opposite sides of a wall, so you might hear us clunking around our place at mealtime. The rest of our living space is on a separate floor, upstairs over the barn, so we are pretty unobtrusive.
The Pennamaquan River, which runs through Pembroke, has several good swimming holes, and nearby lakes and ponds have spots for public access as well. You might want to bring water shoes. Some people swim in the ocean, but it is COLD!
1. Don't be shy: if you need anything or have questions, please don't hesitate to ask!
2. I'll plan to be here to meet you and answer any questions on your first night, so it's helpful if you can give me a rough estimate of your arrival time. But if you'd prefer to settle in on your own, without worrying about a time frame, that's fine, too--just let me know! There's an info sheet that covers the basics you'll need to get comfortable and make the space your own.
3. Pet policy: Pets are quite welcome. A $25 cleaning fee will be added to your reservation price. You'll need to keep your dog on a leash right around the farm, but there is a pasture down back where dogs can run and play off-leash, as well plenty of untrafficked dirt roads for off-leash walking. Please note that if your dog tends to bark a lot in an unfamiliar environment, this is not an appropriate situation because it may disturb guests in the cabin across the driveway.
4. Smoking outside only.
5. Feel free to wander anywhere on the farm, but please be courteous about allowing the cabin and its guests (on the other side of the driveway) the utmost quiet and privacy! (See my listing "Artist's Cabin on Yellow Birch Farm.")
