In its origin Lavapiés was the Jewish Quarter of the city. By order of the King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, was surrounded by a wall which used to close its doors in the evening. In 1391 Jewish mass killings were suffered under the present streets of the Fe, Salitre, Ave Maria, sombrerete and Jesus and Mary.
Near Salitre Street, appeared traces of what could be a Hebrew cemetery. Many Jewish families lived in Lavapies till the days of the expulsion in 1492. It seems that the name of Lavapiés could come from a fountain in the square, which was the ritual washing of the feet before going to the temple.
In the late 1980's Lavapies was a neighborhood inhabited exclusively by older people, typically in older homes and small built around a courtyard, which is called “corrala”. In recent years, the youth population has been gaining ground as well as people from different countries.
