West Coast ‘Dwell’ House + an acre of forest + 40’ saltwater pool = the perfect urban oasis. Open, spacious (1200 sq. ft.) and bright; forest outlook; huge shaded deck. Close to shops, restaurants, sea wall, and trails; 20 min to city by bus/car.
The West Coast Modern guest house sits on one acre of land, with forest and creek, along with the owner's residence. The guest house is a separate building; walls/screens insure privacy for both houses, even when out on the decks. The architecture of this 3 year old building mixes post-and-beam with a clean, modern aesthetic. A 20 foot skylight compliments the large windows, and pours light into the downstairs stairwell. There's an 8 by 40 ft. deck which has a 'treehouse' view into the forest (and that was in fact the name of building when we conceived of it — The Treehouse). We find that most of our guests spend much of their time on the deck, which has a dining table & chairs, lounge chairs and a small gas barbeque. Great for a drink and a diner at sundown after a dip in the pool, back from a hot summer day of tourist-ing in the city.
Note: the cottage is a 'reverse plan' with the majority of the living space on the top floor (with main entrance) and 2 bedrooms and bath downstairs. The bedrooms are 12 x 12 and 12 x 14, one with a queen bed and the other with a double bunk (double on bottom; twin on top.) There is a small patio outside the two bedrooms, nice for a quiet cup of coffee waiting for the rest of the house to wake up.
This is the sort of property that is ideal for many kinds of guests — in fact, most of our guests have a hard time leaving. European & Asian visitors find the property especially fascinating given the rarity of this kind of space in other countries.

The swimming pool/hot tub is the only shared area of accommodation. It is a 15 ft. walk from your front door, separated by a privacy screen on your side. (When we're in the pool, you can't see us. But our windows look over the pool at the bedroom level. Don't worry; we've got privacy system in place!

Our family consists of three adults, and 1 almost adult. The guest house is managed by Marika (Majka) Hahn, our daughter, who will be here to greet you, show you the guest house, and help you with your travel plans in Vancouver and whatever else you might need. Should anything go wrong, we will be on site to help. We're always more than happy to help, but we respect your privacy.
CRITTERS. Although we are in the city, the creek that flows through the property begins up in the mountains behind us. This means there are semi-urban 'critters'—racoons, squirrels, and skunks and some fish in the creek (but not big enough to eat!). Some people might not be comfortable with the very idea of 'critters', so we thought we'd let you know.
STAIRS. The stairs down to the guest house are steep, but well lit and with a sturdy handrail. The steep slope conforms to city code (so not crazy or dangerous) but I mention this for any guests who may have mobility problems. The bedrooms are also down a flight of stair from the main living area.
SMOKING. No smoking please inside the house. If you smoke outside, please use a tin to collect your cigarette butts as the forest is tinder dry this year.
CHILDREN. We love children and our property is a child's paradise, given the pool, forest and creek. But for just this reason, children under 12 require supervision by an adult at all times on the property.
POOL. There are pool rules for safety and hygiene of the usual pool kind (no running, shower before entering in the outdoor shower, and so on) but nothing unusual.
SMOKING. Ours is a NON-SMOKING property.
PETS. We will consider well-behaved pets, so please inquire. (Then again, not ALL well-behaved pets are acceptable. For no amount of money will we consider, say, a well-behaved Burmese python, no matter how cuddly. )
I am from West Vancouver, B.C. I work at Simon Fraser University as a professor of philosophy and neuroscience but despite that, I am actually quite a nice person. I live with my husband and 2 more or less adult children and we all enjoy living on the west coast, with all it has to offer.
