West Coast ‘Dwell’ House + an acre of forest + 40’ saltwater pool = the perfect urban oasis. Open, spacious (1200 sq. ft.) and bright; forest outlook; huge shaded deck. Close to shops, restaurants, sea wall, and trails; 20 min to city by bus/car.

Le logement

The West Coast Modern guest house sits on one acre of land, with forest and creek, along with the owner's residence. The guest house is a separate building; walls/screens insure privacy for both houses, even when out on the decks. The architecture of this 3 year old building mixes post-and-beam with a clean, modern aesthetic. A 20 foot skylight compliments the large windows, and pours light into the downstairs stairwell. There's an 8 by 40 ft. deck which has a 'treehouse' view into the forest (and that was in fact the name of building when we conceived of it — The Treehouse). We find that most of our guests spend much of their time on the deck, which has a dining table & chairs, lounge chairs and a small gas barbeque. Great for a drink and a diner at sundown after a dip in the pool, back from a hot summer day of tourist-ing in the city.

Note: the cottage is a 'reverse plan' with the majority of the living space on the top floor (with main entrance) and 2 bedrooms and bath downstairs. The bedrooms are 12 x 12 and 12 x 14, one with a queen bed and the other with a double bunk (double on bottom; twin on top.) There is a small patio outside the two bedrooms, nice for a quiet cup of coffee waiting for the rest of the house to wake up.

This is the sort of property that is ideal for many kinds of guests — in fact, most of our guests have a hard time leaving. European & Asian visitors find the property especially fascinating given the rarity of this kind of space in other countries.

Accès des voyageurs

The swimming pool/hot tub is the only shared area of accommodation. It is a 15 ft. walk from your front door, separated by a privacy screen on your side. (When we're in the pool, you can't see us. But our windows look over the pool at the bedroom level. Don't worry; we've got privacy system in place!

Échanges avec les voyageurs

Our family consists of three adults, and 1 almost adult. The guest house is managed by Marika (Majka) Hahn, our daughter, who will be here to greet you, show you the guest house, and help you with your travel plans in Vancouver and whatever else you might need. Should anything go wrong, we will be on site to help. We're always more than happy to help, but we respect your privacy.

Autres remarques

CRITTERS. Although we are in the city, the creek that flows through the property begins up in the mountains behind us. This means there are semi-urban 'critters'—racoons, squirrels, and skunks and some fish in the creek (but not big enough to eat!). Some people might not be comfortable with the very idea of 'critters', so we thought we'd let you know.

STAIRS. The stairs down to the guest house are steep, but well lit and with a sturdy handrail. The steep slope conforms to city code (so not crazy or dangerous) but I mention this for any guests who may have mobility problems. The bedrooms are also down a flight of stair from the main living area.

SMOKING. No smoking please inside the house. If you smoke outside, please use a tin to collect your cigarette butts as the forest is tinder dry this year.

CHILDREN. We love children and our property is a child's paradise, given the pool, forest and creek. But for just this reason, children under 12 require supervision by an adult at all times on the property.

POOL. There are pool rules for safety and hygiene of the usual pool kind (no running, shower before entering in the outdoor shower, and so on) but nothing unusual.

SMOKING. Ours is a NON-SMOKING property.

PETS. We will consider well-behaved pets, so please inquire. (Then again, not ALL well-behaved pets are acceptable. For no amount of money will we consider, say, a well-behaved Burmese python, no matter how cuddly. )

This is a fantastic place to stay, with terrific hosts. Kathleen was extremely responsive with correspondence and had taken the time to set up a medieval castle on the counter for my son to play with when we arrived, which he loved instantly and made us all feel welcome.

My wife, I, 1 year old daughter and my parents went to this place for my parent's visit to Vancouver. Our first AirBnB experience. The place was in a very quiet place right next to forest. Outside the terrace was a beautiful forest with all the tree sounds. Pool/hot tub was awesome. The weather wasn't so good and it was too chilly for us to use the pool, so we just played in the hot tub which had enough heat to make us feel relaxed. The hosts were very kind. We were guided with details from every room to how to use the hot tub. Kathleen even provided my daughter some toys she can play inside the tub. :) We loved the stay. The place looks very open so we were worried if it might be cold at night, but the heating system was great and so was the insulation of windows/doors. We stayed very warm. They had a strict policy on garbage disposal, we tried to follow all the bullets they noted, but we couldn't find the 'green bin' for organic wastes so we had to leave them inside the garbage bin. We had a cat visitor while staying, not sure if he lives with the owner or in the neighborhood. He made contacts with everyone, what a friendly cat. We could grill meat and cook stuff inside the house, they had everything ready from gas barbecue grill to wine glasses. In short, all was great. Would I repeat? Yep, if some other friends visit Vancouver. But not on our own, since it's quite pricey as much as its value.

Hi Vatche, Thanks for the feedback. I know what you mean about the garbage — it's complicated and we need to do some thing about that. Also, I am sorry that the dishwasher wasn't empty and about the coffee maker not working. Emptying the dishwasher is certainly part of our house-cleaning before guests, and you should have had a working coffee maker (which was two months old!). We haven't had any complaints about sharing the pool. During the warm days this summer (and there were lots of them), almost all of our guests used the pool for many hours a day. But, as you say, it's not private from the main house just as a condo pool is generally not private. There's a good picture of the pool and the main house on our website and the caption explains what the viewer is seeing. The privacy screen between the pool and the guest house just serves to increase privacy for both parties.

The house location is great, and Kathleen welcomed us very well! The pool was a blast for the kids, and the kids loved the cat ((URL HIDDEN) was a great enjoyment for them.

I am from West Vancouver, B.C. I work at Simon Fraser University as a professor of philosophy and neuroscience but despite that, I am actually quite a nice person. I live with my husband and 2 more or less adult children and we all enjoy living on the west coast, with all it has to offer.
