The cabin is still available for hearty folks who want some time near the woods or to have a good sweat in the sauna.

The weather here can be unpredictable including wet and/or snow. The cabin itself is cozy and fairly easily heated with small electric heater, but familiarity with a woodstove is helpful. Trails to and from the parking area can get wet and the outhouse is a short walk from cabin…

And it is a wonderful spot. Best if you read the posting thoroughly and we chat before booking.

Le logement
The Glade is a perfect space to relax and re-calibrate.

Sit on the covered deck enjoying a cup of good coffee, go for a walk to the local beaver pond or the Kinsol Trestle, and enjoy local, delicious food. The land is on a quiet, gravel road with no through traffic, so it is usually quite tranquil. The cabin is about twenty minutes from the City of Duncan, and is located in the heart of Cowichan Valley's wine country. There are some great swimming holes in the wild Koksilah River, a 20 minute walk away. I generally have a couple of bicycles to loan if you want to venture further afield. The Trans-Canada Trail, which cuts through our land, is a popular cycling destination giving you access from Lake Cowichan in the northwest, to Shawnigan Lake, in the southeast...

There is usually good cell service at the cabin, but I recommend the Glade as a great place for a book, a bottle of wine, perhaps, and a digital detox. Right now I have a two night minimum stay, but I encourage guests to stay longer, if they are able, and settle into the spaciousness of the days here.

The cabin is a hand-built tiny house, with a wood-fired, cedar sauna, a loft for sleeping, and a small sitting area. There is delicious, cold running water and an outdoor, covered kitchenette with a barbecue. Most guests spend a lot of time enjoying the perspective on life from the covered deck or among the local forests...

In the past I have enjoyed offering meals to my guests, but given concerns around Covid I will not be doing that for now. Please plan to be more or less self-sufficient. The kitchen includes things like salt, pepper, olive oil, balsamic, hot sauce, sugar, etc., and I can provide other things to help out, like farm-fresh eggs, coffee/tea, granola, etc.

Please note that for your bathroom needs you will have your own clean, airy outhouse (with a view).

A note on noise: I fell in love with the small valley here, in part, because it is so quiet. However, we do have rural neighbours who will on occasion fire up their chainsaws or other machinery. This doesn’t happen often, or for extended periods, but given my own love of quiet, I wanted to be clear so that I don’t feel bad if this happens...

Accès des voyageurs
You have the whole (small) cabin which includes a cozy loft space with a comfy double bed, a sitting area, a covered deck, and a cedar sauna. The wood-fired sauna can be booked for a sweat (for an additional $15 fee), if desired, or can be converted to a separate quiet space with a single bed. The front deck of the cabin opens to a beautiful forested yard area.

There is no bathroom in the cabin, but there is a small sink with good drinking water. There is one electrical outlet as well as solar lights and candles. There is an outhouse not too far away (but far enough) which is clean and comfortable. There is a cold shower, which goes with the sauna, and access to an outdoor warm shower by arrangement.

The cabin is mostly off grid and off the beaten path, so it is rustic and requires guests to be a little bit hardy and nimble. Please be prepared to climb the ladder to access the loft and I recommend good, sensible footwear to best navigate the local landscape.

Also, please note that the latter half of Mountain Road and Humes Road (about 5 km) are gravel roads, subject to seasonable variability in condition. Winter conditions sometimes require winter tires and chains.

Autres points à prendre en note
If you are planning to come in cold weather, you will want to bring good boots and be comfortable with managing a wood stove (there is also a small electric heater). I will start a fire and give you all the information (and dry firewood) you need. The cabin is small and well insulated, so can be kept quite cozy. The sauna can be booked for an additional $15/night.

Our small valley neighbourhood is usually quiet and seems very remote, but is not so hard to get to. For cyclists and walkers, access to the Trans-Canada trail is a great bonus. We have our own beaver pond, five minutes from the cabin, which is well regarded as a local bird and wildlife sanctuary. Lots of wineries are within an easy drive, or a reasonable cycle. Access to the Koksilah River, a 20 minute walk, is a great bonus. The river is still relatively wild and has a number of lovely, cool swimming spots.

I've been living on the land here in the Cowichan Valley for fifteen years now. I've built a few small houses (including the sauna cabin), established an organic garden, and I have a thirteen year old boy and a two year old girl. I love to cook and to eat outside around a fire. I play banjo sometimes. I like to make things including custom knives, sourdough bread, and beer. I also love to read and have a pretty good collection of books if you need anything to read while you are here...

I am generally around the property and happy to help people as needed. My own hand-built house is about 40 meters away, but the cabin has a private feel. I love to cook; I play banjo and enjoy music around a fire; I grow gardens, and make custom knives in my shop when I have the time.
