Seeing all the gleaming reviews of Tom and his place, I was very much looking forward to our stay in New York. Tom was timely with his responses to my inquiries, and was very helpful and offered his own tips and advice for exploring the city. Check in was not an issue and he met …

Jean, let me preface by saying that I know this was your first experience on airbnb which is different from a hotel experience. I'm sorry you had an encounter with a centipede. That must have been very traumatising. I once had a face-off with a cricket when camping which is still difficult for me to talk about. The only place I have ever seen a centepede is in the boiler room of my house. You are right, it probably came through the crack in the tile. As for the overall cleanliness. I clean the room and bathroom thoroughly in between each guest. As I am a full time teacher, I cannot afford to have cleaner come in to turn over the room every day as is provided in a hotel room. You said that when you returned to pick up your bags late in the day (which I held for you for your convenience) the room seemed tidier than it had been when you arrived. I assure you that room was equally well cleaned directly before your arrival. There was certainly a stark contrast between the condition you left the room, and how it looked after I cleaned... Despite this I left you a nice review considering it was your first stay and I didnt want to deter other hosts from accepting your requests. As for the home itself: steam heaters get very hot when its cold outside. The pipe that you see feeding the hot steam into the heater, well it gets equally hot.... The pipe is quite conspicuous, you would have had to have fallen onto it or grabbed it. I'm not sure what else to say on this. The walls of my home are lath/plaster from 1895, far from paper thin and more sound resistant than just about anything you find on new construction. That being said, you were in New York City... "The city that never sleeps" By NYC stadards, my block is in fact very quiet. Despite this fact, I leave fresh complementary earplugs next to the bed for every guest because I know that guests who do not live in a city may be unaccustomed to noise from the street. I assure you that any stay in Manhattan will be 10 times louder, with the exception of sound-proofed hotel rooms. The location of my home is actually perfect for someone who wants to explore a little outside the stricly tourist attractions, and its only a 20 minute rise to Manhattan. Overall, seeing that this was your first airbnb experience, perhaps you were not appropriately managing your expectations appropriately. I must warn you though, just like myself, hotels give clean sheets between every guest and only clean the comforter every few guests. Additionally, most hotels are not as gracious as myself when it comes to smoking herb in their rooms all day. You'll need one of those boutique resorts in Boulder Colorado to get what your looking for. Nice I hear, but pricey....
