“Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square) used to be the location of the royal palace, until it was destroyed in 1755 by the Great Earthquake. The royal family moved to another residence in the district of Belem, and the new arcaded buildings became the entry port of the city. Its north side hosts a triumphal arch and one of the city's legendary cafes, Café Martinho da Arcada, a favourite for writers Fernando Pessoa, Almeida Garrett and Eça de Queiroz. The centre of the square boasts the statue of King José I, which is 14 meters high”

“Founded in 1778 under the name Café da Neve (Snow Café), it then sold sorbets that in that period were famous across the city. In 1829, after a number of owners, it was sold to Martinho Bartolomeu Rodrigues, with the café soon becoming popularly known by the name of its new owner. Leading figures in Portuguese intellectual life were regulars with the café achieving its greatest fame due to the great universal poet Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935). In the café, he wrote the "Message", the only book he was to see published in his lifetime. The table where Pessoa would normally sit seems to be awaiting his return. On the walls, photographs reveal moments from the poet´s life in the Lisbon of the 30s”

“Praça do Comércio, Commerce Square in English, is Lisbon’s main square. It was built on the site where the old Royal Palace used to exist before it was destroyed by the earthquake of 1755. The southern end of the plaza is open and looks out onto the Tagus River. The other three sides have yellow-coloured buildings with arcades all along the façade. When the square was first built, the commercial ships would unload their goods directly onto this square, as it was considered the “door” to Lisbon. On the river bank, near the square, is the Cais de Sodré ferry terminal from which several ferries depart down the Tagus River.”

“A beer museum and restaurant. Seriously, what more do you need? They have what we consider one of the best pastel de bacalhau ever. That's a cod fish cake in case you're wondering. Sounds crazy, but it's really crazy good. Located in the main city square by the river [Praça do Comércio]”

“A beautiful public square lined with shops and cafes. It is considered the centre of Lisbon and is a real display of the old wealth the Portugal accumulated during its empire.”
