Synagogue
“Opened in 1859, Budapest’s Great Synagogue is Europe’s largest place of Jewish worship (and the second biggest in the world). The stunning architecture and interior décor is worth the trip alone, but a visit to the Great Synagogue (aka Tabakgasse Synagogue) also aims to guide visitors through the history of Jews in Hungary. Inside you’ll find the Hungarian Jewish Museum & Archives, as well as the Holocaust Tree of Life Memorial.”

Marché fermier
“The Great Market Hall in central Budapest is Budapest’s most famous marketplace. Whilst many locals still use the market hall as a place to buy their groceries, the market is incredibly popular with the tourists too. Locally grown fruits and veg, and locally sourced meats are found on the lower floors, and souvenirs including lace, chess sets and leather goods are available in the upper floors. As well as individual ingredients, it is possible to pick up homemade local delicacies like goulash and langos from the food stall upstairs.”

Lieu historique
“The Citadel, which sits atop Gellert Hill, was constructed by the Hapsburgs following the failed Hungarian War of Independence. It was thought that its prime strategic position would make it easy to control both Buda and Pest, should any future uprisings occur. Troops were stationed at the Citadel until 1897. Soviet forces once again used the fortress to control the city during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, and tanks which were situated there fired down on the city. The Citadel now houses a restaurant, a hotel and a museum.”

“Vörösmarty Square is the most elegant pedestrian zone in Budapest. It lies at the northern end of Váci Street (fashion street) and above the western end of the Millennium Underground (Metro line 1). On the north side of the square stands the eclectic Gerbeaud House, home to the world-famous Hungarian confectionery.”

“The square The territory between the Pesti Barnabas street and the Piarista street, that was venue of the former University Theatre, which includes buildings looking at the Danube, is actually the geometric center of Budapest, the starting point of Pest. You can find a part of the square - below the ground- showing ruins of Contra-Aquincu. In the 19th century the neoclassicist building of the town hall tower was standign here, in front of the market square - so it was definately the center of downtown Pest, no wonder that it operates even nowadays as the culinary centre of the city! The view across the river is a unique experience! Sitting here or lying in a bean bag you can feel the modernity of the 21th century with the unlimited wireless access and still be surrounded by the historical scenery. The Kiosk terrace with the sunshades is very attractive for a lunch menu around noon and by afternoon the confectionery masterpieces tempt the guests. In the evening the restaurant develops into a sophisticated, modern place to meet for a cocktail. The former downtown city center, in the heart of the city came to life again!”

Monuments/Sites célèbres
“The Liberty Statue on Gellert Hill is one of the few prominent Communist statues which remained in situ after the transition to democracy, in part because of its iconic location overlooking the city. The statue was first erected in 1947 to commemorate the Soviet troops who lost their lives liberating the country, however the engraving was later changed so that it commemorated “all who sacrificed their lives for the independence, freedom, and prosperity of Hungary”. The panoramic views from underneath the statue are unparalleled, and help to make the walk to the top of the hill well worth it.”

Belvédère
“Pest-side pedestrian zone between Chain Bridge and Elizabeth Bridge is called Danube Promenade (Duna-korzó). Popular among locals and tourists, fringed with 5-star hotels (InterContinental, Marriott, Sofitel), restaurants, cafés, bars and casinos. Best panorama of Buda with clear and gorgeous view of the Buda Castle, Citadel, Gellért Hill and bridges of Budapest. It is a great spot for enjoying the annual fireworks of 20 August. The Promenade is lined with arts masterpieces, like the "Kiskirálylány" (Princess) sitting on the railing, the building of the Vigadó and the statue of the statesman István Széchenyi by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.”
