“My favourite place to walk in a peaceful and interesting environment. If you want to escape the heat of summer or you're looking for a pleasant bush walk as an alternative to sand, the tracks that crisscross Milnthorpe make a pleasant place to be. With numerous entry points along the beach, SH60 and from Nelson Street, you can take your pick for where start your walk. For the most part the tracks are flat but because of tree roots and natural obstructions like the odd fallen tree etc, they’re not great for buggies You can come out at the river mouth but be careful of the changing tides and strong currents. You could also come out on Milnthorpe Beach, look for shells, crabs and pipi or build forts out of driftwood. While you walk, keep an eye out for sculptures hidden amongst the trees. ”

“This is another of Golden Bay's very interesting areas. View a working small hydro and take a 2hr walk around the old gold mining race that now feeds water to the hydro. ”

“At the very top of the West Coast you will find the sleepy village of Karamea. What you will experience is limestone arches, caves, whiskey coloured river, lake, rainforest and moa bones. Rich unspoiled rainforest stretching across a broad valley floor. Three magnificent arches sculpted by the Oparara River. Bush-fringed streams stained the colour of billy tea from the humic acids washing down through the soil. A truly beautiful and unspoilt area well worth the time and effort to get there. ”

“Take the walk across rolling farmland to Whakariki Beach and be awed by the striking landforms, arches, and caves. If you're lucky, you'll see seals and a wide variety of bird life as you walk the soft sand beach. This is a great place to take a picnic on a calm day, just make sure to pickup all your rubbish! ”
