“If some freak climatic event ever brought winter hibernation to the Big Island, you could survive the lean season by storing the calories away after a single plate lunch at this institution. The food here – short ribs, garlic fried chicken, loco moco etc – is both delicious and served in simply awe-inspiring portions.”

“Tucked away in the Kopiko Plaza strip mall, in downtown Kona, is the 808 Grindz Cafe. Stop into this laid-back little cafe for a hearty breakfast or lunch. Their fluffy pancakes are a favorite, try them with their homemade coconut-vanilla or macadamia-vanilla sauces. They also have a variety of eggs benedict and moco dishes. For a dish packed full of flavor, try the adobo fried rice. There is also a blackboard behind the counter offering breakfast and lunch specials for the day.”

“Kona is world famous for it's coffee so visiting a coffee farm is a must-see while you're in town. What's unique about Thunder Mountain, is the location. High above the tree-line, this coffee plantation is in one of the many different climate zones the Big Island has to offer. With a rainforest-like feel, the elevation is a break from the heat on the sunny shores of the beach. ”

“This is my go-to coffee shop when we are heading north for a beach day. Ask for the "Firecracker Mocha" it is a mocha with cinnamon and cayenne pepper. I like to add an "add shot Espresso" and ask for whipped cream on top - of course I take it iced. On a side note, they have some fun souvenirs (not cheap).”
