Museum
“The Torture Museum is located at Singel 449 in the heart of the city, near the flower market overlooking the Singel canal. It is reachable by public transport via trams 1, 2 or 5 to Centraal Station. The museum is open daily from 10 AM until 11 PM. Admission is €7.50 for adults and €4 for children. The museum is multilingual, with information provided in English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.Fittingly, the layout of the Torture Museum is of a maze of small, dark rooms. Often listed amongst the “world's most unusual museums”, it features a theatrical atmosphere, which lightens what would otherwise be a rather somber mood. Each room displays one or two torture devices...”

“The Koninklijk Paleis (Royal Palace) on Amsterdam’s Dam Square is one of three palaces still in use by the Dutch royal family. It is used for state visits, award ceremonies and other official receptions. When the palace is not being used by the royal family, it is open to the public. Visitors can explore the magnificent interior and discover the rich history of the building”

“The Dam Square is about 15 min. walking from our appartement and its worth the walk. On both sides of the square you will find Amsterdams biggest shopping streets, Nieuwedijk and Kalverstraat. On the Square you can find the historical Palace, madame tussauds, Bijenkorf (shopping mall) and various cafes which you can visit as well.”

Lieu historique
“Dating from the early 14th century, this enclosed former convent is a peaceful haven, with tiny houses and postage-stamp gardens around a well-kept courtyard off Gedempte Begijnensloot. Within the hof (courtyard) is the charming 1671 Begijnhof Kapel, and the Engelse Kerk, built around 1392. Also here is the Houten Huis, the Netherlands' oldest preserved wooden house, dating from around 1465. There’s another entrance to the Begijnhof near this structure: look for a wooden door on the Spui’s north side, east of the American Book Center. The Beguines, a Catholic order of unmarried or widowed women who cared for the elderly, lived a religious life without taking monastic vows. The last Beguine died in 1971.”

“Dam square is the historical center of Amsterdam and the most central point if you take a look at the map. I wouldn't recommend to visit this overcrowded part of town, but IF you happen to be in the city center, take a look at some prominent buildings: Royal Palace, Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), department store De Bijenkorf, Beurs van Berlage. ”
