“The Tegallalang Rice Terraces in Ubud are famous for their beautiful scenes of rice paddies and their innovative irrigation system. Known as the subak, the traditional Balinese cooperative irrigation system. While the rice terraces serve as a highlight photo-op in the Tegallalang area, souvenir shopping options abound along the roadsides, and the trip to Pakudui village is worth the time. Pakudui is reachable after a right turn up from the famed rice paddy outlook. Find magnificent carvings and wooden art forms lined up along the small and winding village road. ”

“Gunung Kawi in Tampaksiring Village - 11th Century candi (pronounced chandi, meaning tombs) of a Royal Balinese Family. Archeologists believe the candies commemorate the King, Anak Wungsu, and his Queens. There are three sets of tombs: Royal Tombs (King and 4 favourite wives), Queens Tombs and the 10th Tomb. All of the candi are carved from the riverside cliff face and have beautiful reliefs of temple facades. The candi don’t have any bones or ashes, but seem to have been erected to complete the religious rites of honouring the spirits of the deceased. (30 minutes north/east of Ubud)”

“A lovely late afternoon activity. In this little village you can watch the Herons come home to roost every single day of the year. From about 5 pm they fly across the sky from the West and settle in the trees. There are literally thousands of them and as legend has it, they are meant to be the reincarnation of the spirits of the dead people who died in a massacre during the anti-communist era in Indonesia. They did not come here prior to th 1960's. After the massacre, they start to show up. If you love nature and birds it is quite a phenomenia to witness so many wild birds coming into this small village”
