“SMK is the greatest museum and I love it, but check their exhibition first. On Friday afternoons, they have occasional happenings. Take a break in their café and enjoy the view. If you have children, consider booking them into their children art workshop - that is really cool. ”

“National Museum of Denmark: An easy ten-minute walk from Tivoli along Vestergade brings you to the National Museum (Nationalmuseet), a must-see attraction for anyone with an interest in Danish history and culture. Some impressive runic stones are on display, and the Danish history collection includes a sun chariot (cult object in the form of a cart) that is more than 2,000 years old, Romanesque and Gothic church fittings, Danish porcelain and silver, and collections of antiquities and coins. The ethnographical collection, including items from Greenland, gives an excellent impression of life among the Eskimos. Other areas covered include Asia, Africa and Oceania as well as the culture of the Indians. Here, you'll also find the Prince's Palace (1744), a Rococo building influenced by the French style of the period. Around five-minutes' stroll from the National Museum, Thorvaldsen's Museum is also worth a visit to view spectacular works from this famous Danish sculptor. ”

Château
“Castle For 400 years, the castle was the headquarters for the collection of the Sound Dues. Kronborg was a legend in its heyday in the late 1500s. With its menacing guns pointing directly at the ships in the Sound, sailors did not dare to sail past the castle without paying the king his Sound Dues. The Sound Dues filled the king's coffers, and Frederick II adorned the castle with spires, sandstone and copper roofs. Kronborg Castle became one of the most beautiful castles from the Renaissance period. Sailors, merchants, diplomats and aristocrats recounted tales of the magnificent castle and court in Elsinore with its pomp, splendour and cannon blasts that resounded to the toasts that the king proposed. The lavish court life vanished from the castle after the fire of 1629. The flames devoured most of the castle’s precious furniture, paintings and its copper roof. After that day, the castle's fortunes faded. The Swedish king, Karl Gustav, occupied and plundered Kronborg in 1658-1660. For the next three hundred years, Kronborg was only used as a fortress and barracks for the Danish army. Today, life has returned to the castle which now receives 325,000 visitors a year. ”

“One of our most famous tourist attractions is the 1.25 meters tall sculpture of The Little Mermaid at Langelinie Pier. When looking at her, if can seem strange why such a small sculpture is important for us. The sculpture from 1913 is based on the fairy tale of the famous Danish writer, Hans Christian Andersen (HCA) and the sculpture of The Little Mermaid was made by Edvard Eriksen after the Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen (founder of Carlsberg Beer) fell in love with the mermaid character in a ballet based on HCA’s story. The Little Mermaid statue is free to access, and it is a nice walk from Østerport Station to Langelinie (Langeliniekaj 2, 2100 København). If you use the boardwalk (Bryggebroen) to Dybbølsbro Station, you have 4 stops on the S-Train to Østerport. Or you can hop on a canal cruise as most of them sail by The Little Mermaid.”

“The star-shaped fortress of Kastellet was originally commissioned by Frederik III in 1662. Today, it is one of the most historically evocative sites in the city, its grassy ramparts and moat surrounding some beautiful 18th-century barracks, as well as a chapel occasionally used for concerts. On the ramparts is a historic windmill, and you get some excellent views of the harbour and Marmorkirken's Vatican-like dome.”

“Town Hall Square: Busy Town Hall Square (Rådhuspladsen) is dominated by Copenhagen Town Hall (built between 1892 and 1905), which is based on a mix of Italian Renaissance and medieval Danish architecture. For marvellous views, you can climb the tower; at 106 meters high, it is the tallest in the city. The building itself is richly adorned with sculptures and paintings. Above the main entrance is a figure of Bishop Absalon in gilded copper, and in the Great Hall are busts of Danish notables such as Martin Nyrop (1849-1921), the architect who designed the building, the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1840), Hans Christian Andersen (1805-76), and the physicist Niels Bohr (1885-1962). The World Clock at the main entrance was designed and constructed by Jens Olsen in 1955 and shows not only the time and date, but also various astronomical constellations. ”
