Le Guide ai Sestieri di Venezia

Unmissable spots in Venice
Bounded by the Grand Canal and the Giudecca, it is mostly a quiet sestiere and an incredibly charming one. It is considered one of the most prestigious areas and is quite residential in character, although the presence of the Gallerie dell’Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection turn it into a tourist destination. TO SEE: Gallerie dell'Accademia, Punta delle Dogan (Pinault's collection), Basilica Santa Maria della Salute, Carmini church and Scuola dei Carmini, San Nicolò dei Mendicoli church, Ca' Rezzonico (museum of Venetian Eighteen Century), San Sebastiano church, Squero di San Trovaso.

Together with Cannaregio, it is the largest sestiere and mainly popular in character apart from the Riva degli Schiavoni area, which sees much tourist movement owing to its closeness to San Marco and to the presence of many hotels and offers a splendid view on the whole basin and its traffic (here you can take the boats to some of the minor islands, such as Isola degli Armeni or San Giorgio, and major islands such as the Lido). TO SEE: San Giovanni and Paolo church and Scuola di San Marco (currently public hospital), Arsenale, Riva degli Schiavoni, Basilica di San Pietro di Castello, Giardini della Biennale, Greek Church, Santa Maria Formosa church and square, Church of San Giovanni in Bragora.

Cannaregio and Castello are the largest sestieri and both are two-faceted. Cannaregio offers both the noise of Strada Nova and Lista di Spagna (both full of shops, stalls, and hotels) and the quiet and silence of Fondamenta della Misericordia and the Ghetto area. TO SEE: Venice Ghetto and Jewish Museum, Church of Madonna dell' Orto, Church of Sant' Alvise, Church of Abbazia della Misericordia, Ca' D'Oro, Gesuiti Church, Church of Miracoli.

The sestiere of San Marco, together with Rialto area, is the main touristic spot of Venice. The heart of the area is St Mark's square, actually one of the most beautiful square of the world, which is the result of the combination of Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance art merging together in a spectacular view. Today’s square is the result of several interventions occurred from the 9th century to the end of the 19th century. Besides the square and it monuments, it worths to take a walk in this area , surely very crowded but anyway unmissable. TO SEE: St Mark's square (Basilica di San Marco, Doge's Palace and the prisons, Clock Tower, bell tower, museums of the Area Marciana, Ponte dei Sospiri). San Giorgio island and church, bell tower, monastery and Longhena library. Santa Maria del Giglio church, Fenice theatre, Scala Contarini del Bovolo, Campo Santo Stefano and Palazzo Franchetti.

The San Polo district is located in one of the most historically important areas of Venice (the islet of Rivo Alto, which later became Rialto): in fact it hosted one of the first settlements of fishermen and merchants who then developed the city. It is a very lively district, thanks also to the presence of the open-air market in Rialto, but also thanks to the many taverns frequented by the Venetians, where you can drink a "ombra" and eat a "cicheto". At the foot of the Rialto bridge, before reaching the ancient market, you can visit the oldest church in Venice, the church of San Giacomo di Rialto (called San Giacometto), and then continue towards the market. Here, while walking among the fish stalls, you can admire the Pescheria Vecia and the Pescheria Nova, and you can have a wonderful view of the Grand Canal and the Palazzo della Ca 'd'Oro located on the opposite bank. The sestiere takes its name from the largest field in Venice (Campo San Polo), surrounded by marvelous palaces, beyond which you can reach one of the most beautiful and important Gothic churches in the city, the Basilica dei Frari. Just behind the Frari church there is the Scuola Grande di San Rocco which houses, among other things, 54 wonderful paintings by Tintoretto. But the beauty of the district is also and above all the atmosphere that reigns in the callette, between wonderful Gothic and Renaissance palaces and small hidden courtyards.
