Botanical Gardens adjacent to the University. It's a lovely stroll and the species are well-marked. There is a great website that highlights certain plant species and lists what's in bloom before you get there. The walk through the gardens is easy and interesting, and a gorgeous creek runs throughout. It's a nice way to stretch your legs.

It's official. I go here every time I am in the area. The sushi is fantastic and creative, but the Japanese style noodle and rice dishes are divine as well. My favorite? The ginger tea. Whole big slices of ginger, bright red goji berries and a swirl of honey. Yum!

Trail Rides through a large property across the French Broad from the Gatehouse. There are different length rides on fun horses, and many of the longer rides stop at the property's garnet mine (my favorite part) where you can find garnets sparkling everywhere --and keep what you find!

Plenty of spots to jump onto the Parkway, head north or south of Asheville. In the best or worst of weather, there are some spectacular views, stone tunnels, and several interesting historical spots and museums along the way. Doesn't cost a thing to enjoy this beautiful National Park.

The Gatehouse is a great jumping off point to the AT because the town of Hot Springs is just up the road! There are shuttles from the trail, or just park in town and make your way for a classic day hike up Lover's Leap.
