You can walk here straight from the house along a ridge with great views and lovely river . Edward I held court here for six months and it is lovely setting. Look out for the sand martins nesting nearby , check out the graveyard ( it thats your thing) The tea rooms are fab too

Now we see the first defined part of Hadrian's wall going of the the distance , this iconic fort has a great little display and fabulous walks to Gilsland, along Hadrian's wall. Take a picnic and enjoy the sun by the river, at the ruins of Willowford bridge you may even see some deer. Enjoy a warm welcome in the cafe at Gilsland
