Very unusual History with this place, in lovely grounds that border the River Lowther; site of the music festival 'Kendal Calling'. The Lowther family have been part of Cumbria life for generations; the castle, grounds, and gardens are a lovely way to spend an afternoon; good cafe on site. Recommend to have a wee search on line re 'The Lowther Family' before going to give yourself some perspective....interesting.

The present owner, Sally Nightingale, has invested her passion, her love of heritage and the responsibility of maintaining 1000yr old Norman castle. This has culminated in the recently opened 'Norman Keep' as part of The Norman Centre. One of the previous owners of Appleby Castle is Lady Anne Clifford, a very impressive, driven lady who left her positive mark throughout Cumbria in the 17th Century. Definitely worth an internet search on this lady!!
