Historic Litchfield
An escape to historic Litchfield Ct is both relaxing and educational. A late 18th century New England town with attractive shops and restaurants along the historic Green. Home of the first Law School. Incorporated in 1719, its name came from Litchfield, a town of Staffordshire, England; Indian name "Bantam." Notable citizens (past and present):Oliver Wolcott, Jr. , Henry Ward Beecher, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Lyman Beecher, Tapping Reeve,Ethan Allen,Colonel Benjamin Tallmadge. Truly a Revolutionary town where George Washington met with Colonel Tallmadge, who was the commander of the 2nd Connecticut Light Dragoons and also headed Washington's "secret service" during the Revolutionary War. The White Memorial Conservation Center
The White Memorial Foundation and Conservation Center is located in the Towns of Litchfield and Morris . Created in 1913 by Alain C. White and his sister, May W. White, the Foundation and Center today comprise 4,000 acres of forest, fields and wetlands. With 40 miles of trails, it is maintained by the Foundation for use, without charge, for hiking, biking, horseback riding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and other outdoor activities. The most popular trail is the Little Pond, or “Boardwalk,” Trail. There are also 3 trails with interpretive signage or materials: the Trail of the Senses (which also has braille signs), the Interpretive Nature Trail, and the Ice House Trail. Numerous other notable trails also crisscross through the beautiful and diverse habitats of White Memorial.
This 400 acre preserve is food for the nature lovers soul! Relaxing , peaceful and tranquil , enjoy a walk on the boardwalk, kayaking or bird watching.
