Sharon’s Guidebook to Beautiful Bude

Sightseeing
There is so much to see and do around Bude. The South West Coastal Path is endless and endlessly beautiful, with hidden coves, steep cliffs, and long sandy beaches. The following places are some of my personal favourites, many of which you can walk to from Stone's Throw.
Walk the South West Coastal Path from Crooklets beach and in just 20 minutes you will arrive at this beautiful unspoilt beach. Time it right and at low tide you can walk all the way along the sand. It's a 5 minute drive (down Maer Lane), parking is by donation in the National Trust car park. It has all the charms of a rural beach, but is close to town. Dog friendly all year round. Don't forget to visit the rustic caravan for the best cream tea!

Summerleaze Beach is to the South of Crooklets, and you can get to it simply by following the coastal path or if driving following the one way system through town. There you will find the Sea Pool, Canal, and The Breakwater. Well worth an explore. The most popular local beach for swimming, surfing and crabbing! Lifeguarded during the Summer months.

The canal once went all the way to Holsworthy. These days you can walk, run or cycle the route, enjoying the birdlife and nature, and the Weir at the far end does a great cream tea/ice cream/lunch/dinner. At the Bude end pay a visit to The Barge tea room. 4 mile circular flat/easy route. Kayaks, paddle boats and canoes are also available to hire.

Clovelly village is famous the world over. It remains a working fishing village and plays host to many events, celebrating its history and its Gardens. It clings to a 400 foot cliff in North Devon and has no vehicular traffic on its steeply cobbled street, just donkeys and sledges. Time to enjoy a step back in time.

Bude Sea Pool is a beautiful, part natural, part man-made swimming pool in the rocks at Summerleaze Beach. Created in 1930, the Sea Pool has provided safe bathing at Bude for over 80 years. It is one of the very few tidal swimming pools which still remains open to the general public today and is open throughout the year, free for all to enjoy. The Pool is topped up by the sea at high tide each day. Great for an early morning dip!

The Bude Farmers and Craft Market runs every Friday from 10 until 3pm from Easter until the last Friday in September. The market is situated on the Wharf along side the Canal in Bude. All the stalls sell their own produce, ranging from food items, plants and crafts; everything is locally made, grown and produced. There is a great variety to suit all tastes. Including local cheeses, chutneys and pickles, a local farm selling their own meat including a fabulous range of sausages, and pie stalls and cake stalls. There are also lots of arts and crafts on offer including glass artists, wood crafted items, textiles, knitted items and needlecraft pieces, and hand carved and sewn leather goods.

Food scene
This is a list of my favourite eateries in the area. Some have changed their menus and the way they operate because of the current Covid Crisis. I strongly recommend booking as early as possible - even before you arrive - to ensure a place, as seating will be limited. If using takeaways, again, it is best to call early and book your slot. There are lots of lovely places to eat and I'm sure I've missed a few off, please feel free to suggest recommendations.

Supermarkets
In town there is a Co-op, Morrisons, Lidl and Sainsbury's. Sainsbury's is walking distance, and the smallest of them all. Co-Op is in the centre of town, Morrisons and Lidl are towards the A39 at the top/main entrance of town. Please be aware that during peak season they will be busy, and there will probably be queues.
