This little gem of an independent restaurant is less than a 5 min walk from the house. It serves freshly cooked and very delicious Italian and Mexican food - book early for eat, or phone up for a take away (you have to pop round to collect) and get 10% off. Our favourites are the fajitas (on sizzling platters), and the enchiladas. The garlic bread and pizzas are also fantastic! They don’t have a ‘children’s menu’ as such but they happily make most pizza and pastas in a half size when you order, and a ‘half size’ portion will feed even the hungriest of children.

The best breakfast in Sheffield for sure! This little cafe is staffed by adults from the charity Work Ltd. All the proceeds go the charity and the food is just unbelievably amazing! You can also buy things they make in the workshops, cards and gifts. The location is a little quaint... as it’s tucked away behind the Bents Green Special School, but it is signposted from the main road, and you can park by the playing fields next door.

Mouthwatering steaks and seafood! I can not describe to you the quality of the food here - it’s def a date night special for us. The sharing platters are just out of this world taste wise. It’s all locally sourced (fresh fish brought in from the coast daily). It’s def not somewhere we take the kids, as we’re a large family and the prices reflect the quality, so it’s not a budget family restaurant.

This is our all time favourite ‘eat in’ Chinese in Sheffield. Family run it serves delicious home cooked food, has an extensive menu and is family friendly if you need to take the kids. Parking is metered on the road outside (70p per hour). The area is full of different international restaurants, we’ve heard good things about lots of them, it can also be busy on a weekend evening, so best to go at lunchtime or on a quieter midweek / Sunday afternoon or eve. It’s open all day!

Our favourite local Chinese. Hot and delicious every time. Takeaway is on Holme Lane about half a mile from the house. Doesn’t look very exciting from the outside but really friendly owners and really reasonable prices. By far the best tasting and value Chinese locally.

It’s the most amazing ice cream, and whilst there you can visit the cows, sit in the gardens, and pop for a meander down one of the many footpaths. The views are just breathtaking! Combine it with a walk around one of the local reservoirs for a perfect family trip!

The cafe is at the start of a walk down by the river Rivelin. You can walk (or cycle) for miles into beautiful countryside starting from this cafe, past old water wheels and historical boards about Sheffield’s steel industry. We have spotted woodpeckers, and water birds, squirrels and butterflies. On a sunny day the lido is open for the kids to splash in, and don’t forget some duck food!

Bakewell is a great day out. It has a market every Monday, and the fish and chip shops and tearooms serve delicious food! Just brilliant! The museum, the underground tour (which needs pre-booking), and the shop and cafe. There’s also some outside play space and special events in school holidays. It’s free apart from a donation for the tour. The underground tours are led by exceptionally knowledgeable locals - some ex miners, and families of miners. Can answer lots of your questions about our local mining heritage.

Great park with bandstand and ducks. The museum is great for a rainy day, really interactive for kids, we especially love the local history artefacts / displays and videos... my kids love the natural world room. It’s free entry with a donation to the work of the museums service. Highly recommended. Parking is limited, so walk or bus is best. There is a Q Park opposite the children’s hospital (Durham Road) which reliably has spaces, if you can’t find anything on the local roads.

A museum that tells Sheffield’s history - you can even see the Don engine working at periods through the day! If you want to find everything out about our past... this is the place to go... the industrial building itself is stunning. Often busy as it’s a favourite Sheffield families place... it’s at the start of an 8 miles off road walk or cycle on an old railway route. The Monsal viaduct is a must see as you go across it, and the tunnels are great! There are plenty of historic boards and maps which help you find out about this important Peak District infrastructure. The cycle hire shop is amazing... recommended that you pre-book though as it is very popular. The cafe and bookshop are great too... and there’s ice cream further along the route at the other end too.

Whirlow Hall is a working farm and charity with shop and cafe in the barn. For toddlers, a perfect little trip as you can see the sheep, chicken and horses for free as you pick up some local produce and have a coffee. There’s footpaths / bridleways signposted at the top of the field (by the pig shed), which you can meander into across the fields. If you’ve got a map you can connect yourselves up on the footpaths to make this a good starting spot for a walk (with free parking).

Another beautiful river walk and cafe. Forge Dam is stunning, if you keep walking out you’ll end up in the beautiful Mayfield Valley. My children love the mandarin ducks on the mill pond above the cafe. There’s a children’s play area right next to the cafe. For a perfect short walk (1.5miles ish) park on Rustlings Road (opposite Endcliffe Park) and walk up through Bingham path (entrance on your left by the mini roundabout) on the level footpath as far as Forge Dam - it’s buggy / scooter friendly too. Food deliveries through COVID-19
Locally, the big supermarkets have been struggling to release enough slots. Our best tips: Iceland (walkable from the property, offer in store / click and collect / short notice deliveries)... Hedgerow Preserves: Simon delivers breakfast items to you on a Friday - add anything else you might want, fresh products especially good value - order direct online. Asda click and collect - there is an Asda about 10 mins drive away (S5) with lockers for a drive through Click and Collect. They have consistently had short notice delivery slots throughout the pandemic. For anything else - try City Grab.

Hedgerow Preserves
Our lovely friend Simon runs this local company. He delivers fruit and veg boxes around Sheffield on a Friday, but also has other products (his own jams, local made pies, dairy products, cakes, curries... ). He delivers the breakfast hamper to the property for you on a Friday, but if you would like any other items, just check out his website, there’s no delivery charge and just put ‘Borough Road holiday’ as your address. We can highly recommend the Secret Cake Co. cakes - our favs are the chocolate orange or the raspberry and white chocolate! https://hedgerowpreserves.co.uk/collections/all
