Remember the final scene in Shawshank Redemption on the beach? This is where they filmed it and it's beautiful. Open fall-spring on weekends until 4:00pm, closed during turtle nesting season. This is where the huge leatherback turtles return each year to lay their eggs. There aren't places to eat or other amenities in the immediate vacinity, so bring a picnic, towel, and plenty of water and sunblock.

You can walk here from the house, about five miles round trip. Take a water bottle and do it on the early side before it heats up, or drive there and watch the sun set and stay for some stargazing. This is the easternmost point in the US. There's a giant sundial and gorgeous views and breezes.

One of our favorite hikes on the island. Beautiful scenery, and a magical swim in tide pools art the end. Make sure you check conditions before you go. If waves are high, it may not be safe to get into the pools. Make sure you have some water shoes, the rocks in the tidal pools are very sharp.

You'll need to hike to this beach, but it's worth every step. You can take the trails from the house, or drive to Point Udall and then hike down the trail to the second bay (the one with the wooden staircase). Bring a mask and snorkel. The coral was damaged in the hurricanes a couple of years ago , but if the water is calm you will see schools of fish. We like to pack a picnic, a book, and travel Scrabble and spend a half day here. It can be a popular spot on the weekends, but it's a big beach so there's a way for it to feel private and popular at the same time.
