House and grounds, originally comprised of 1000 acres, was owned by John Milton Hay, private secretary to President Lincoln and subsequently Secretary of State under McKinley and Roosevelt. The Fells, named for Hay's ancestral Scotland, was his family's summer retreat for 3 generations. There are tours of the house and the gorgeous gardens or you can do a self guided walk through the trails that meander through the forest and along the shore of Lake Sunapee.
