Le Provencal has been around for many years. It's a consistently fabulous french restaurant run by a husband (genuine Frenchman) and wife (genuine Tasmanian) team who do all the cooking and service on their own. I have eaten there many times and never been disappointed. The menu doesn't change too often but it doesn't need to - it's always the perfect mix of traditional french dishes. One of my favourites is the steak with bernaisse sauce - you won't find a more perfectly cooked steak anywhere. You will also love the beautiful trompe l’oeil covered walls. Bookings essential (03) 6224 2526 open evenings only on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

My very favourite thing at Banjo's Bakery is their Cape Grim beef and pepper pies. They are delicious! Cape Grim beef comes from the pristine and beautiful north west coast of Tasmania where they breed the happiest, healthiest and shiniest cows :) My other favourite thing is their scrumptious apricot danish pastries. My kids love their sausage rolls, party pies and mini pizzas. They make excellent baguettes/french sticks too.

Great decor and amazing wood-fired pizza and pasta. Can walk-in but best to book - you can do this on-line https://tiama.com.au/ The same crew also run a pizza place out at Berriedale called Local Pizza, just down the road from Mona. Has a great atmosphere and fabulous pizza. So, if you are out that way looking for food after spending a couple of hours at Mona, I'd definitely recommend it. Walk-in only: http://www.localpizzatas.com.au/

A 2 minute walk from the house. Fabulous Japanese food. Lovely staff but their service can be hit-and-miss; some days it's fine but other days it's bizarrely shambolic. But if you go knowing that, and muster some patience to cope if it's not coming together for them, the food will be worth your effort!

The best grocer in town. Hill Street is a locally owned business with shops scattered around Hobart. The Salad Bowl is my fav and my local. The staff are super friendly and helpful and it has the buzzy atmosphere of a well loved local. The deli includes fresh meats and fish (incl best priced free range chicken). They also have an extensive cheese selection and a good range of Tasmanian wines. The fruit and veg is always local when possible and better priced than the large supermarkets. If you have your car, I absolutely recommend shopping here. It's even worth the walk if you don't :)

Wursthaus has a diverse selection of quality fresh pre-prepared meals that are perfect for holiday-mode dinners. My families favourite is their bolognaise sauce - we have it nearly every week. Just grab some veggies and pasta from Salamanca Fresh across the road from the Wursthaus and you have a quick delicious gourmet dinner.

Entertainment & Activities

The State has a number of very comfortable cosy cinemas. They screen everything from arthouse to Hollywood blockbusters; there is always a happy choice. And the best thing is, you can take your glass of wine in with you. So pick a movie, grab a glass of Tassie wine and enjoy the entertainment! I can highly recommend it :)

Be pre-warned: this place isn't cheap. I've only ever had a drink (which was a delicious Tasmanian gin) so can't comment on the food BUT if you can splash out on a fancy cocktail or glass of champers this is the place to do it: very cool decor and spekky outlook across the bay.
