Food Scene

Long Rifle Lodge is within walking distance of our cabin. They have an excellent restaurant and bar, with a stunning view of the Matanuska Glacier. Both our cabin and the lodge were built in the 1970s, with help from the same creative neighbors, so you will see similarities in the woodwork. Long Rifle Lodge serves great burgers, burritos, and has vegetarian options. The lodge is decorated with the widest variety of taxidermied Alaskan animals that you will probably find on your trip to Alaska - great for taking selfies! They do close early, so do not wait til late in the evening to go there.

MICA is one of the glacier hiking companies in the Matanuska Glacier area so you can get info about tours that are available in our area while you are there.

Grand View Cafe is a restaurant seven miles northeast of our cabin. They sell espresso, and they are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They even do pizza to go! I love their breakfasts and their salmon burgers. My son is quite fond of their chicken strips. Actually, everything on their menu is good, including the desserts! Grand View Cafe closes at 9 pm.

Treeline in Alaska is about 3,000 ft, and Eureka Lodge is right there, located at Eureka Summit, which is the highest point on the Glenn Highway. There are several trails leading into the Nelchina Public Use Area near the lodge, which makes it a popular snowmachining destination in the winter months. Eureka Lodge is a basic, roadside cafe that is open year-round for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The food is good, the service is quick, and the pies are all homemade. Eureka Lodge is 26 miles northeast of our cabin, on the Glenn Highway. From the summit (on clear days) you can see four different mountain ranges - the Alaska Range, the Wrangell Mountains, the Talkeetna Mountains, and the Chugach

Stone Lady is a local mountain, two miles east of our cabin, with a neat Alaska Native legend. It is now often called "Lion's Head" because it supposedly looks like a lion's head, but because lions have no place in Alaska Native history, I prefer it's old, Native name, Stone Lady. I love the legend that it comes from. The AirBnB website keeps changing the name to Lion Head, as I write this guide, which I find annoying. Stone Lady is quite a photogenic mountain. Coming from the east, it looks rather like a "Thumbs Up." It is possible to hike to the top of Stone Lady for a sweeping view of the Matanuska Glacier, but beware that there are powerful cell towers now located there.

The Alpine Historical Park is located at mile 61 on the Glenn Highway, in Sutton. It is a neat place to stop on your way to or from the cabin. The park has a lot of informative signs that will teach you about the names of the surrounding peaks, mining history in this area, and local Alaska Native history and culture. There are large pieces of petrified redwood on display that were found in the Talkeetna mountains. There is a cool playground for kids, many informative displays in historic buildings that you can enter, and a flush toilet (in summer months.)
