What to do and where to go in Alghero Sardinia

Informazioni sulla città/località

Alghero really is a unique, picturesque, quiet relaxing town, where people are welcoming and always have the time and courtesy to stop for a chat. A fun, creative, people-friendly town, of narrow streets full of impromptu encounters and opportunity for exchanges. Alghero is considered by many to be the most fascinating town on the island. It is situated on the northwest 'Coral Coast' of Sardinia. The town was founded by the Genoese Doria family during the first half of the 12th century. Because of its strategically important position in 1354 the Counts of Barcelona conquered the town and Alghero was repopulated by people of Catalan-Aragon origin. This domination lasted over four hundred years and is clearly visible in the architecture of Alghero’s intriguing old town and in the locally spoken dialect. Protected on the sea on three sides by great stone walls and guarded at its entry by a series of stone towers, Alghero is a unique protected gem with its many churches and small squares dotted throughout a network of narrow cobbled streets. Today Alghero is a bustling little town which offers more than just beautiful white sandy beaches and emerald waters. Our unique history, traditions, architecture, and diverse population together with an enticingly mild climate make Alghero a fascinating place to visit all year round.

BEACH

This is our favorite beach, away from the crowds, a 1,5km stretch of sand with sand dunes, no buildings in sight except for Torre Negra, on the right overlooking the end of the beach, built in the 16th C by the Spaniards to protect them against the Arabs. There's a hip bar at the beginning of the beach from which you can enjoy incredible sunsets while sipping your Ichnusa beer. They also have concerts and jam sessions in the evening. Great vibe! plus dogs are welcome at this beach!
