The remains of one of the largest Romano-British villas in the country are located just a couple of miles from the cottage in Chedworth. The drive up the Yanworth valley and around Stowell’s perimeter is just as magical as the Roman Villa itself. (National Trust)

Just around the corner on the other side of Northleach is a unique deer coursing grandstand built for the Duttons in 1634, renovated by the National Trust in the 1990s. The grandstand sits within the 4,000 acres of rolling Cotswold countryside of the Sherborne Estate with views down to the River Windrush although Sherborne Park itself was converted into apartments after the estate was given to the Trust in 1982. Also the location for the BBC's long-running "Spring Watch" live wildlife programme and a great place for deserted country walks.

Parks & Nature

One of England’’s greatest gardens, an ‘Arts & Crafts’ masterpiece created by Major Lawrence Johnston. It has to be noted that weekends and Bank Holidays are "busy", there's no getting away from it and a visit first thing in the morning or after 3pm can be more enjoyable, but it's a must for any garden lover. Miserden is the quintessential Coutswold experience. Glorious garden and useful, traditionally-run nursery and glasshouse café on a Wills family estate hidden away behind the Duntisbournes. Some say that it's hard to find, but relish that fact as it makes it less likely to be overrun. Miserden is all that is best about the Cotswolds. Don't tell anyone.

Drinks & Nightlife

Northleach now has a brilliant wine bar. The former Ox House was transformed by a new team in 2018 and is now a truly great winebar and café. An eclectic range of wines chosen by Mark Savage MW and a nice menu of winebar classics and sharing platters. Courtyard garden at the back and a comfy stopfrom which to watch the Cotswolds' world go by. Closed on Mondays, but otherwise it's the winner!
