Our Favourite Places to Eat and Do Coffee

Goolwa has quite a number of cafe style restaurants as well as local pubs and clubs. Our favourites are as follows:
Recently re-named to Bombora's this very popular cafe has indoor and outdoor dining... the locals love it, and why not? We often go here and sit outside on the paved area to have coffee with cake. This cafe has a great view across the water back towards the bridge. Great location all year around, even on a winters day you are sheltered by the wind and can easily catch a few nice sun rays to warm the soul again.

Located on the wharf, right on the water's edge, this place is a great spot to spend some time on a nice sunny day when the breeze is still. We often enjoy our mid morning coffee whilst reading the complimentary newspaper. They have a number of small cakes (some gluten free) and also serve meals throughout the day. You can sit inside or out depending on the weather and your preference. We usually choose outside under the umbrellas on the wharf and watch the boats sail by. This is a great place to stop to enjoy a coffee and an uninterrupted view over the river.

This place makes a great smashed Avo which we often enjoy in the mornings for breakfast. They also make a great number of dishes which are of local produce and contain lots of wholefoods. Oh, don't forget the coffee.... this is also good.

If you pop into town at odd hours and need a quick bite to eat, this cafe serves a little later than most and offers a very wide selection of good sized meals to eat in or take away. Includes fish and chips, burgers, schnitzel packs, coffee, cakes, cool drinks, pizza... the list is long and varied. The staff also seem to have a 'can do attitude'.

If you like fish and chips this might be your next favourite spot to stop! On a good day we will ride our bikes along the Encounter bike path (about 15km one way) to this cafe and spend the morning enjoying the wonderful views of Horeshoe Bay. Of course they sell coffee as well however the menu is primarily fish and chips. This can be also be accessed by driving or catching the Cockle Train to Port Elliott.

Great Places to Explore and Discover

Goolwa and the Flerieu Peninsular have lots of little spots to explore and discover. Did you know that Captain Cook and the French Captain Flerieu accidentally met in Encounter Bay whilst mapping Australia. Their countries were at war at the time and instead of warring the two captains decided to share information, thus our name is 'Flerieu Penninsula' and you will notice some places West of Victor Harbor have French names and East of Victor Harbor have English. Local Art is very popular here and there are some very renowned artists that display their work in the local galleries.

Once of the few beaches in Australia you are permitted to drive your vehicle on (4x4 only). If your prefer it is just as enjoyable to park and walk down onto the beach (particularly in summer). Depending on the weather some people body surf and swim at the patrolled beach. Sometimes it is super busy and sometimes it is super quite.... there's also a new surf club under construction and small cafe. This is very popular with the locals and day trippers.

I love the art in this gallery! It is forever changing but they have such a great array of different art and sculpture displayed. All with a local touch, what better way to remember your trip to the Coorong and Beach than to buy a memory and take home with you!

You can visit this by catching a local trip on the 'Spirit of the Coorong'. They will sail up the Murray River, through the barrage and along the Corrong. You will experience passing through the lock of the barrage, see the New Zealand Fur Seals basking in the sun and playing in the water, cruise past the set of "Storm Boy" and have an opportunity to walk on the 40 mile beach. A great day out and one that we highly recommend if you like the natural environment.

You can ride your bikes or if you like walking can walk to this spot. This is where salt water meets fresh water and if they are releasing water through the lock and the barrage at the time of your visit you will see a feeding frenzy like no other. The local birds flock to the open gates and you will see many varieties feeding on the fresh water fish as they die when they enter the salt water. If it's not feeding time, all is calm and you will see the seals basking in the sun and possibly playing in the water. (sometimes you see one swim past the unit whilst sitting on the jetty across the road). Alternatively if you walk the walking track through the sand hills towards the beach from the car park you will be blessed with one of the best views Goolwa has to offer... it's 360 degrees of panoramic scenery, including views of the town, river, barrage, Coorong and Goolwa Beach. One of my favourite spots!

This bay is so pretty! The photo does not do it justice! If you like a leisurely stroll along a pretty beach this may be one of the best in town. There is also a walking trail around the point of the bay where you will see many large boulders, smashing waves and possibly seals. A great place to test your photographic skills.

Basham Beach is a great place to whale watch during the winter months. Set high on a rise, the rolling hill is a fantastic spot to have some wine with a platter or a picnic while you seek out the whales that come in to rest with their young. Note: The whales aren’t always there… this is a Winter-Spring event. Summer is lovely for cool breezes and a leisurely walk along the beach.
