Swimming, walking, picnics

Hank's beach has a beautiful path through the woods. At the 1/2 way mark there are several trails down to the beach. If you keep going straight down a hill toward the water, you'll find a beautiful beach covered in stones. When the tide is out, there are nice sandy spots. This is a popular picnic and swimming area in the summer, although on many occasions you might get it all to yourself. The water is crystal clear and the view is spectacular.

Manson’s Lagoon is very unique and beautiful. A white sand beach along the ocean on one side, and on the other – a lagoon with an island in the middle of it. There is also a hiking trail, picnic areas, a waterfall.. lots to see. If you get the chance, go to the lagoon at low tide and you can walk out to the island in the middle that is usually surrounded by water. You’ll see all kinds of starfish wedged in the rocks, waiting out the low tide. In the summertime you can also see bioluminesence in the lagoon in the evenings.

This is the beach right in your backyard! I highly recommend looking at a tide website, because depending on whether it’s low or high tide, there are different spots to check out. This is a great website for seeing where the tides are at: https://www.tide-forecast.com/locations/Whaletown-Bay-British-Columbia/tides/latest When the tide is low, head left out of the drive way and all the way down to the end of the road to the Smelt Bay Provincial Park parking lot. Then start walking left, heading south, around the corner. When the tide is out, you can walk way out onto the sand flats, and it’s spectacular. Often you’ll find starfish and sand dollars in the little tide pools. There are also often seals you can see when you go out to the water’s edge. When the tide is about half way out, there are some fantastic swimming spots with large sandy sections of beach and very shallow entry. To access these, walk down to the beach and you’ll find a little path taking you to the water – just a few minutes from the driveway. When you get to the beach, head to the right and walk all the way around the point. As you start walking north, you’ll see these sandy sections, hidden in between the rocks. These are perfect places for kids to play in the sand and shallow water. When the tide is high, it’s prime swimming time all along the beach, and the water will be warm!
