The Naarden Fortress has been beautifully restored in recent decades. The ancient city is full of special monuments. It offers something for everyone with a wide variety of shops, antique stores, galleries, restaurants and museums, combined with lots of greenery and sporting opportunities. An absolute must for a special day out! Due to its strategic location, the city of Naarden became militarily interesting and furnished as a fortress with double city walls, a moat, bastions, city gates and dozens of functional buildings such as a weapons store or soldiers' residence. It became part of the Dutch water line; the grounds around the fortress were excavated so that the land was lower and therefore easier to collect. No houses were allowed to be built outside the fortress walls. Only then did the field of fire remain free. The lake was dug in the southeast corner of the Polder Gein and Gaasp in the late 1960s. The Gaasperplas mainly serves as a recreational area. The water is up to 35 meters deep. Recreation area Gaasperplas of 166 ha is part of Groengebied Amstelland. Part of the neighboring Gaasperpark, with its fine-meshed pattern of cycle and walking paths, still reminds us of the Floriade at that location in 1982. After the Floriade ended, almost all additions were removed, leaving a simpler city park. At the Gaasperplas there is a marina of a sailing club, a canoe rental, a windsurf club, an indoor playground and several lawns and beaches both on the north and south bank. There is a part where nude recreation is allowed and there is a place for divers.
