Food scene

It’s usually busy, but it’s great for families (pretty noisy and offers great variety for young and old alike). I love the location because it starts you off at the top of famous Thames St., and when you roll out after your meal, you can start walking and enjoying all that Thames has to offer.

After taking your boat tour around Newport, stop here for lunch. It’s casual, great for both families and adults, and it’s literally right on the water. It’s located in Bowen’s Wharf - perfect place to shop and walk around.

It’s not that we return here because the food is outstanding, but the volume and location make it an easy stop with kids. Also located on Thames (about half way down), you’re in the heart of it all.

Slightly off the beaten path, this is a funky spot with great international cuisine, fun drinks and cool atmosphere.

After a fun day in Newport, try some signature R.I. dishes at Flo’s! Great seafood and can’t beat the location. Super casual and good for families.

Yes, you will pay, but you do have options! If you can’t get a reservation, there’s walk in options or dining on the “lawn.” Plenty of Adirondack chairs or you can bring a blanket of your own. The views are incredible and the drive down Ocean Rd to get there is equally as enjoyable.

We love going to Mama’s for a great Italian meal! Parking can be tricky but it’s well worth it. It’s located all the way down Thames, park close by or enjoy the stroll and shops along the way. You won’t leave hungry...

Sightseeing

Yes, we prefer Bonnet, but to me, this is the most beautiful beach in RI. The surf is great (but not as tame as Kelly), it’s just getting there for the day is more “labor intensive”. If you go early enough then shower off and head to Newport for dinner, it would be part of a great day trip.

While touring the mansion brings me back to middle school field trips, it’s still one of my favorite “touristy” things to do. I’d recommend your kids be a little older (8-10 depending), so you can really enjoy these “summer cottages” as they were formally known by the families who owned them. We love The Breakers and Marble House the best.

Yes, families could go, but we love this as part of a couples getaway. You’ll go for a tour all around Newport, taking in sights such as Hammersmith Farm and Fort Adams. Perfect thing to do on a clear day and super easy to get a seat.

Absolutely gorgeous walk along the coast, located behind all the mansions along the Newport coastline. I loved going for a run down Bellevue then cutting through the Salve Regina campus to the Cliff Walk. Makes you forget you’re actually exercising for a minute :)

If you’re trying a beach in Newport, go to Second Beach, but Easton’s has a fun carousel and boardwalk to stroll. It also has a small aquarium that’s fun for kids. Best part is it’s across from Flo’s clamshack...
