Beaches

Zakerjan Beach is located in on the eastern edge of the Old Town and it is one of the oldest swimming spots in Korčula, and favoured by the locals. It is the closest beach to the apartment. Facing East, the beach is sunny from dawn until the early afternoon while later in the day it is completely shaded by Old Town’s buildings – a good choice if you prefer to spend an afternoon on the beach but still would like to avoid strong sun. The beach has a lot of large rocks, concrete slabs/ platforms and jetties suitable for sunbathing as well as several steps and ladders for getting in and out of the sea. Although in the very centre of the Old Town, the waters on this beach are very clean and transparent with beautiful green and turquoise colours. As water is deep enough here, jumping into the sea from the rocks and jetties is safe. Also, a great place to snorkel. Numerous local cafes are right above the beach along Zakerjan promenade, serving all sorts of food and drinks. The access to the beach is via several steep and narrow steps leading down below Town Walls and Towers. Due to its location, this beach is also ideal to go to if afternoons are windy as Zakerjan is completely sheltered from the Mistral wind, the wind that blows most frequently in the summertime.

A snakk sandy beach, which is located about 4 km from Korcula Old Town and is connected with Town by regular bus service. It is particularly popular and fun for kids. There is also an excellent restaurant that serves fish that was cought by the restaurant owners. There is not much natural shade during the day shade so it is recommended to take parasol or beach shelter to avoid the strong sunshine. You can access the beach by bus from the bus station in Korčula, going to the last bus stop, about 15 minute ride. . From the end station heading north you will reach Bilin Žal, while going south you can reach the other sand beach in Lumbarda - Vela Pržina. Even if one of these two beaches is windy the other is bound not to be. You can check the bus time table online.

Beach Mandrač , pronounced “mandrach” (meaning small boat marina) in Sveti Nikola is on about 10 min walk West from Korcula Old Town, going along the road Svetog Luke into Strečica road. Mornings here in the summer are cool and nice as sun is on the other side and Monastery walls provide welcoming shade, while afternoons tend to get pretty warm. The beach runs down the coast from the Maksimilijan Vanka Museum towards Strečica bay, passing right along the walls of Sveti Nikola Church and Monastery into the small marina / jetty. The beach is comprised of large rocks, stones as well as some patches of pebbles that are ideal for small children. The waters around Mandrač are crystal clear and very clean – great place to snorkel. Mandrač beach is a very popular swimming spot for locals though still (often) undiscovered by visitors of the Town. Throughout the whole day some shade is available on certain points of the beach. Due to it location along the open and unsheltered cost, the beach can be very windy when Maestral or Bura are blowing. However, it is fairly sheltered from Šiloko / Jugo wind (see the windrose). The main access to the beach is by small path descending down to seashore.

On the saint Mark Square is the St Mark’s Cathedral (Katedrala svetog Marka), which was built in the 15th & 16th centuries. It has a statue of St Mark above its entrance with figures of Adam and Eve on either side. Inside the Cathedral is a ciborium over the main altar by Marko Andrijic, a gifted local stonemason. Below this lies a restored Tintoretto, with another piece – The Annunciation – in the southern nave of the Cathedral.
