The Asticou Azalea Garden is a jewel. Well worth a visit to stroll along the paths throughout the peaceful, zen-like garden. It is beautiful all year long, and especially exquisite in spring when the azaleas are in bloom. Many weddings have been photographed here. A nice thing to do before, or after dining across the road at the lovely Asticou Inn.

This path begins in front of the historic Bar Harbor Inn by the marina, and follows the rocky shore past old, beautiful architecture with views out to the ocean of the Porcupine Islands. A lovely thing to do before or after dinner on a summer night-especially when the moon is full. Toward the end of the path, one can take a path to the right back into town, and walk through town if you like, to enjoy the shops or have an ice cream cone while completing the loop.

For a nice swim, warmer than the ocean, Echo Lake is the perfect choice. There are several access points-my favorite being "the ledges"- accessible by a short path down from the parking lot along Route 102.

The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden is a private garden in Seal Harbor, Maine that was built by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller and her husband, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. between 1926 and 1930. The garden was designed by Beatrix Farrand and blends Eastern and Western landscape traditions in a summer season display. Reservations are required to visit this garden. Set within acres of moss-carpeted woods, the garden is designed to be at floral peak in August. Its unique atmosphere is derived from a combination of Eastern statuary with a border garden in which perennials build the foundation of the flower beds and annuals provide an explosion of color.

Thuya Garden is a gorgeous flowering garden located on a granite hillside overlooking Northeast Harbor on Mount Desert Island, Maine. It was originally designed and built in 1956 - 1961 by Charles K. Savage, a long-time resident of Northeast Harbor, along with financial support from John D. Rockefeller. The garden exhibits an English style influence with special input from Beatrix Farrand so that it will incorporate the unique character of the Maine coast. A variety of annuals and perennials line the two long sides of the garden. An open observation pavilion sits at the top of a slight incline on the north end overlooking the main garden that cascades down to a shallow reflecting pool below. Thuya Lodge was constructed from 1912 - 1916 by summer resident Joseph H. Curtis, its owner and Boston based landscape architect. The garden was constructed in an orchard also owned by Curtis. A memorial in his honor is located part way up the Asticou Terrace Trail. Thuya got its name from the abundance of white cedar (Thuya Occidentalis) located in the area.

An art gallery right across the street? How wonderful! Beautiful, local paintings and other special things done by local artists. A must visit. Their art receptions are a wonderful way to get a feel for the area and to meet the artists.

Food scene

This is a lovely old inn for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Overlooking the picturesque views of Northeast Harbor, the Asticou Inn is owned by Acadia Corporation, former operators of the Jordan Pond House for many years. Known for their popovers and tea, they also have a full, consistently good menu and overall lovely ambiance. Deck seating with beautiful views, and across from the Asticou Azalea Gardens-a must see. Many weddings are held here. A gorgeous part of the island to visit.

Mmmmm....in a quiet setting, The Burning Tree serves gourmet fresh caught seafood and vegetarian... Elmer and Allison, owner-chefs provide the best food superbly prepared. There is a small greenhouse and gardens on site where vegetables and flowers are grown. It is my (and many people's) favorite restaurant and I highly recommend you dine here while visiting the island.

This is the BEST cafe. Baked goods, along with a nice gluten-free selection, freshly made bagels and a delicious breakfast burrito are all homemade and are simply superb. Coffee choices are all excellent. These guys really know how to do it well.
