Natural Wonder

There are many things to see and do in the National Park. For first time visitors, the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire is a great place to start. The highlights you will not want to miss are the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive and the Dune Climb!

City/town information

Suttons Bay is located about 7 miles north on M-22. It has many shops and restaurants for exploration within walking distance, as well as a downtown public beach and marina. We eat most often at the Street Side Grill and the Village Inn, but there are numerous other places to try.

Continuing north on M-22 will bring you to the lovely small harbor town of Northport, with numerous wineries along the way. It has many of the same kind of shops and amenities of the other small shoreline towns, including a great ice cream shop walking distance from the sizeable marina. A few miles further north/northeast, encompassing 1,350 acres at the very tip of the peninsula is the Leelanau State Park. It is home to the Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum

Leeland, famous for it's historic waterfront area called Fishtown, is at the mouth of the river that runs from Lake Leelanau into Lake Michigan. Scenic anytime of year, it has very popular and well known restaurants and shops.

Heading south along the Lake Michigan shoreline, Glen Arbor is at the junction of M-22 and 109 (the route to the most popular sights of Sleeping Bear). It is a popular tourist town and offers many shops and eateries.

Empire is home to the welcome center for Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore. It is family friendly and has nice exhibits as well as providing a good overview of what the park has to offer. My personal favorites among the small town shops are The Secret Garden and The Sleeping Bear Gallery. Drive the short distance to Lake Michigan and you will find a wonderful large beach park complete with the Empire lighthouse.
