Try your hand at playing traditional musical instruments, marvel at the fine embroidery and learn about past headhunting practices of the Murut and Kadazan-Dusun. Upstairs are the centuries-old Chinese ceramics retrieved from the Jade Dragon wreck, circa AD 1300, in 2013. The adjoining Heritage Village has traditional tribal dwellings, including Kadazan bamboo houses and a Chinese farmhouse, all nicely set on a lily-pad lake. Next door, the Science & Education Centre has an informative exhibition on the petroleum industry, from drilling to refining and processing. Hold on to your ticket: it also includes entry to the nearby Museum of Islamic Civilisation.

Tour de l'horloge Atkinson

One of the most enduring landmarks in Kota Kinabalu, it stands prominently on a bluff along Signal Hill Road adjacent to the old Police Station. Built in 1905, this all-wood, no-nails structure was built in memory of Francis George Atkinson- the popular first District Officer of Jesselton during the British North Borneo Chartered Company Administration. This Clock Tower has the distinction of being the oldest standing wooden structure in Kota Kinabalu that survived the destruction of Jesselton town during World War II. Till today, it still serves to keep the city’s time. The Atkinson Clock Tower is managed by the Sabah Museum under its Antiquity and History section.

Pu Toh Si Temple

Sabah is proud of its multiculturalism and this is often reflected in its diverse architecture. The Puh Toh Tze temple is a Buddhist temple located off Tuaran Road. Built in 1980, the temple stands out with its traditional Chinese roofing and structure. Perdana Park is a leisure area which offers a range of recreational activities and eateries. The park features a running track and is a popular spot for runners. In between runs, you can opt to squeeze in a quick workout at any of the exercise areas found around the lake. Take a soothing (barefoot) walk on the ‘reflexology path’ while your children occupy themselves at any of the two playgrounds found here. Perdana Park offers one of the best seats in town to enjoy a spectacular sunset on a clear day. Visitors are also spoilt for choice with the wide selection of eateries found here. But the main attraction of Perdana Park is none other than the musical water fountain which comes alive from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, Mondays to Thursdays. On weekends, the performance runs an extra half hour. Each sessions runs for 20 minutes with 10-minutes intervals. The water fountain is fascinatingly synchronized to the accompanying music and lights, creating a dazzling visual display. Children especially love watching the sudden bursts of water, sprouting and leaping in the air to the sounds of local tunes such as ‘Sayang Kinabalu’ as well as classical favourites by the likes of Mozart. The park is handicap-friendly with wheelchair ramps and reserved parking space for the disable. Entrance to the park is free but parking charges apply.
