Walking the Twin Cities' neighborhoods

For families

The Twin Cities has some great indoor and outdoor places for families to explore.
One of the regions finest nature centers for families. Donated by the Dodge family, this former working farm lets kids experience baby animals up close, and visit an orchard, wetlands, apiary, mixed decicuous and pine woodlands, and seasonally, play in nature, such as by building snow forts, picking apples and making cider, or by riding with sled dogs. There is no admission fee. Weekday visits are a quiet, peace-filled wonder.

Historic places

Just off the freeway in St. Paul, this museum is the crown jewel of the Minnesota Historical Society's many museums. It offers a panorama of Minnesota history, music, a lovely cafe, and shop. In my opinion, it is one of the best places for lively kids to visit, offering great indoor interactive exhibits, with thoughtful spaces for kids to let off energy when weather keeps them inside. I've seen groups of kids spend over half an hour deeply immersed in working on the Hormel Spam assembly line!

This museum puts Minnesota's Scandinavian influences on display in the historic Turnblad Mansion, which is located a mile northeast of The Cedars, along Park Street's "Golden Mile" of turn-of-the-century mansions. The Institute offers historic displays, music, contemporary Scandinavian art, and Nordic culture. At the Institute's Fika cafe, enjoy a delicious Nordic-inspired lunch. Fika's Bloody Swede is an extraordinary salty, fruity, flavorful (not spicy - they're swedes!) concoction, built with Minnesota-made Skaalvenn aquavit and beet brine, along with the more familiar bloody mary seasonings.
